Today, I am very interested in participating in Season 28 of the Steemit Engagement Challenge for Week 5, where we will see some of the old movies that serve as an opportunity to remember those days.

Watch a classic movie made before the year 2000. Example films: The Shawshank Redemption, The Matrix, Casablanca, The Lion King (1994)

Saworoide is a popular Yoruba movie story where every household in Nigeria purchased the video cassette in order to enjoy it with their family and friends. People still watch this movie story today because it tells the story of a town called Jogbo, where a person who wants to become a king needs to perform a ritual. Without the ritual, which involves the beating of the Saworoide drum, such an individual cannot be crowned.

It is a movie that was produced in 1999 by legendary director Tunde Kelani. The roles everyone played in the movie are fantastic, especially in the area of Aresejabata and Araparegangan when they started to become friends.

What felt different about the storytelling of the movie compared to newer films?

The movie is educational, and the cinematic style and visual effects used in the making of the movie are fascinating and simple. It's a classical movie where most film producers and directors copy the old style to make new movies in today's world, particularly when the movie relates to stories of past events.

The movie is full of wisdom, especially the role Baba Opalaba played, as well as the quality of the script used in the movie to attract a large number of viewers. During that time, it was among the top 10 best-selling movies. The use of talking drums to convey messages to people in the outskirts is so amazing to me and can never be compared to the new movies.

Did the film age well, or did some parts feel outdated?

The film aged well, and every part of it is wonderful. In fact, it is related to what is happening in real-life events, with Nigeria as a case study. People still have the movie on their phones, thanks to modern technology, which allows easy downloads to our phones.

Every part of the movie is so interesting that some current directors and producers copy similar events in making their own movies. I have watched the movie time without number because I learn a lot from it, although some parts I can consider outdated are the clothes they wore and the vehicles and lorries they used to move from one place to another.

What do you think made this movie a “classic”?

The movie is the standout, featuring many legendary actors such as Lere Paimo, Kola Oyewo, Adebayo Faleti, and including Kunle Afolayan, who was very young at that time. This movie displays authentic Yoruba culture as well as how the military dictatorship operated during those days.

The storytelling of the movie makes it more interesting due to the location of Irefin Palace, which promotes our historical background as a Yoruba tribe. The production value of the Saworoide film makes it more fascinating due to subtitles, which serve as an opportunity for non-Yoruba speakers without losing our mother tongue.

How did the characters or themes relate to today’s world?

The themes of the movie address betrayal, corruption, and politics, which are the main issues that contribute to bad governance in today's world. This can be seen where King Lapite and his chief enrich their pockets with the people's money.

The movie also expresses how the youth fights against corrupt leaders, as they want good governance for the betterment of their people. This movie, Saworoide, is deeply rooted in the Yoruba cultural landscape, and the proverbs they use also make the movie more interesting. It was produced during the military era to critique what the government was doing at that time.
