Practicing My Braiding Skills: One Braid at a time

Let me tell you something about braiding: making it look easy is the hard part. 😂 You can look at a neatly braided hairstyle and think, “I can definitely do that.” Then you pick up the comb and start creating the first line. Suddenly, your confidence disappears. 😂

That was basically me during this practice session.

I used my mannequin head to practice an all-back cornrow style. I wasn't working on an actual client, so I could take my time and pay attention to the little details that usually make the biggest difference.

The first thing I focused on was the parting. Clean lines are everything with cornrows. If the sections aren't properly divided, the whole hairstyle can start looking messy no matter how good the actual braiding is. I also paid attention to the tension and the size of each braid. Too loose and the style doesn't look neat. Too tight and, well... we all know how painful that can be. 😭

Practicing on a mannequin gives me the freedom to make mistakes, loosen a section and try again without worrying about whether someone is sitting there waiting for me to finish.

While taking these pictures, I was basically documenting my progress.

It may not look like a huge achievement to someone seeing the finished braids, but I know how much patience goes into getting better.

Every practice session teaches me something.

Where my hands should be positioned. How to hold the hair properly. How much tension to use. How to make the lines cleaner. And, most importantly, how to become faster without sacrificing neatness.

I'm still learning, and I'm definitely not claiming perfection.But that's the whole point of practice. You don't become good first and then practice.
You practice until you become good.

I'm hoping that as the days go by, I'll look back at these pictures and see how much my skills have improved.

For now, it's one braid, one section and one practice session at a time. ❤️
