Hi Dear Steemians
@Steem4Nigeria community. I greet you all Specially and the organizers of this contest for always giving us the opportunity to share the happenings around us. For me, Last Saturday, our neighbourhood faced a heartbreaking incident that has left numerous residents in disbelief and mourning. A gas explosion took place at Eddie Eddibe in Calabar South, I would like to recount a tragic event that took place in Calabar South, Cross River State, on Saturday.

Fire Incident in Eddie Eddibe, Calabar: Community's Challenge and Reflection
A significant fire erupted at Eddie Eddibe, triggered by a gas explosion, which affected more than 20 homes and left many families injured and without shelter. This incident highlighted the risks associated with inadequate construction regulations, particularly the placement of gas stations near residential areas. It is heartbreaking to consider that this disaster might have been prevented with stricter oversight from authorities.

What’s even more concerning is that when the fire service was alerted, witnesses reported that they merely passed by without providing assistance. It was community members who bravely stepped in to help control the flames, putting their own safety at risk. The delayed response from the fire service resulted in many individuals suffering serious burns and trauma, with victims being rushed to our facility for medical attention. Consequently, our emergency department was overwhelmed with patients; some were treated and released, while others with severe burns required hospitalization. I was involved in caring for the admitted patients, which made my day at work significantly more challenging.

In the midst of the turmoil, the Governor and the Chief Medical Director of our hospital met with the families of those affected. They assured them that proper medical care would be provided to the patients. The Governor also visited the explosion site to offer hope to the displaced families, promising efforts to help restore their homes.

By the time my shift ended, I felt utterly drained. However, on my way home, I observed that life went on for many; families were gathered at the popular Airport Field, enjoying food and drinks, relaxing after their daily routines. This made me reflect on how faithful God has been to me, and while He cares for everyone, some individuals are enduring unimaginable struggles. As I returned home to recuperate, I prayed for the healing and restoration of those affected.

This event serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the need for collaboration between communities and the government to avert such tragedies in the future.
