Watch any movie of your choice from the movie respond to the following;

Films serve not merely as a source of entertainment; at times, they also have the power to transform our way of thinking. This is because certain films possess a sense of realism that resonates deeply with our own lives. We often hesitate to make bold decisions—wavering over whether a particular choice would be right or wrong. However, when we see circumstances mirroring our own depicted on the screen, it becomes much easier for us to relate; it instills in us the courage to anticipate the potential consequences of such decisions.

The film I have chosen for today's competition is "Dangal".

This film is based on a true story—the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat. A wrestler himself, Mahavir was unable to compete at the international level due to financial constraints, leaving his own dreams unfulfilled. Those who possess talent also harbor a deep hunger to realize their aspirations; yet, circumstances often conspire to prevent them from doing so. Mahavir Singh Phogat, however, ultimately succeeds in fulfilling his dreams.

He trains his daughters ( Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari) to become wrestlers, demonstrating that girls are in no way inferior to anyone else—and that, if they set their minds to it, they too can bring glory to their community and their nation. Set against the backdrop of the Haryana region, the film portrays a father's arduous struggle to mold his daughters into wrestlers—a journey in which the daughters absorb their father's training with unwavering dedication, even as society opposes them and subjects them to ridicule.

Ultimately, however, Mahavir Singh Phogat's hard work bears fruit. Gradually, his daughters begin competing at the state level, achieving victory after victory. Then comes the day when they advance to the international stage. Yet, they commit a critical error: instead of placing their trust in their father—who had been their wrestling mentor for years—they begin to rely on the local coach provided there. They start to disregard their father, operating under the assumption that, being a man from the village, he lacks knowledge of modern wrestling techniques.

"Mahavir Singh Phogat" tried to reason with his daughters, but they were unwilling to listen; consequently, their winning streak begins to falter. She begins to lose every match; Mahavir Singh Phogat becomes deeply distressed by this, and his two daughters also start to feel troubled. Then, their father counsels them; the daughters realize their mistake and, returning to their father's tutelage, step back into the arena. They subsequently achieve the victory for which their father had harbored such grand dreams—a victory he had strived for by pushing his girls forward in the field of wrestling, despite the opposition of society. Today, his dream was realized, and he successfully paved the way for his daughters' success. "His decision transformed society's mindset, proving that girls, too, can bring glory to their families."

What was the one decision in the film that changed everything

Two such decisions were made in the film: the first was when the father, defying societal norms, introduced his daughters to a sport like wrestling and personally trained them. Through his immense efforts, he not only brought glory to his daughters' names but also shifted society's perspective. The second decision occurred when the daughters' wrestling careers were flourishing. Having benefited from their father's training, they were scaling new heights of success; however, a single misguided decision on their part caused their careers to falter.

This happened when they disregarded their father's expertise—doubting whether he possessed knowledge of modern wrestling techniques—and instead sought training from a new coach. Consequently, they faced a series of defeats. It was only after learning a lesson from these losses—by reflecting on where they had gone wrong—that they realized the flaw lay in the training they were receiving. They recognized that their father, having trained them since childhood, understood their strengths and weaknesses in wrestling better than anyone else and possessed the technical knowledge required to defeat any opponent. Thus, they returned to their father for training and went on to win medals.

What would you have done differently?

The act of courage demonstrated by Mahavir Singh Phogat is, perhaps, incredibly difficult to replicate. For when society repeatedly stands in your way—bound by the shackles of tradition—breaking those chains becomes an arduous task. I doubt I would have been able to make such a bold decision; or, had I chosen to do so, it likely would have taken me a very long time to gather the resolve. When it comes to the safety of my daughters—had I perhaps chosen a different path—going against society would have been a monumental undertaking.

After all, society does not exist merely "out there"; it begins right within our own homes. While one can certainly answer to outsiders, answering to—and prevailing over—one's own family members is an incredibly difficult task. Consequently, there are times when, despite having identified the right path, we are unable to walk it due to societal pressure. However, had my daughters truly chosen a specific field in which to excel, I would definitely have supported them; I would have stood shoulder to shoulder with them—perhaps by attempting to reason with both society and our family members.

Did you feel the choice made by that character was right or wrong? And why?

In my opinion, the character's choice was absolutely correct. After all, if parents themselves do not support their children in their pursuit of progress, who else will? Moreover, given the nature of contemporary society—in which our daughters often remain vulnerable and unsafe—training of this nature is absolutely essential for them. Daughters need to be physically and mentally robust enough to deliver a resounding retort to the vile elements within this society.

In this day and age, it is imperative for every parent to prepare their daughters adequately so as to prevent any untoward incidents. Mahavir Singh Phogat fortified his daughters in every conceivable way—be it physically or mentally. He never allowed his daughters to be held back, regardless of the circumstances.
