I was only able to participate in this one challenge SLC-S29/W2-“Thinking and Ideas! | Simple Solutions to Big Problems!” this week, and that was in the final hours, sacrificing time for writing news and editorials for my media outlet, byklik.com.

I found this challenge very interesting. There were many interesting options, including major global issues currently, such as the natural disasters currently occurring in Sumatra, including Aceh in my area.

However, I chose waste, a global problem that is also related to the environment. In Indonesia alone, or in my city of Lhokseumawe, waste piles up every day. The amount of waste produced ranges from 14,000 to 175,000 tons per day. The amount of unmanaged waste reaches 13.3 million tons per year.

There are many technological advancements currently being made to process waste into renewable energy. There are machines that process waste into various products. However, this requires high-tech technology, and so far, it doesn't exist in our city.

As the principle of this challenge is to propose simple and realistic solutions that don't rely on advanced technology. Hmm, very challenging.

I propose a very simple approach to waste management at Ujong Blang Beach, Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Indonesia. The second location is the Lhokseumawe City Reservoir. Both are popular tourist destinations in Lhokseumawe City.

During our cleanup activities at the Reservoir and Ujong Blang Beach, we found a lot of plastic waste and waste from local vendors, such as used plastic bottles from soft drinks and mineral water bottles, or organic waste like coconut shells.

I recommend that vendors and visitors be encouraged to separate these types of waste from the start and dispose of them directly in the provided trash bins. Unfortunately, the waste disposal facilities at both locations are inadequate.

In the long term, the Lhokseumawe City Government is asked to provide simple waste disposal sites, but directly process waste into something useful, for example flower vases or various types of unique and interesting displays.

Who benefits most from this solution?

First, the local community, vendors, and visiting tourists benefit most from this solution. They all socialize in a healthy environment without the risk of disease.

When tourist destinations are clean, more visitors will come, thus increasing vendors' profits. The Lhokseumawe City Government can collect fees from vendors and visitors.

Nature also benefits if waste is processed into useful products.

What challenges or limitations do you think your idea might face?

In Lhokseumawe City, awareness of utilizing waste as a source of income is still low, and awareness of disposing of waste in its proper place is also low. It's no wonder that so much trash is piling up in various corners.

The biggest challenge is cultivating a culture of clean living and disposing of waste properly. This culture must begin now and begin with ourselves.

However, it's not impossible to achieve this if it becomes a collective movement, which will bring about change.

Regarding waste disposal sites that are directly processed into raw materials for various needs, this still requires significant costs.

To overcome this, my suggestion is to start with one machine as a pilot project and socialize it to the public. It's that simple.

I would like to invite @zainalbakri, @munaa, and @abuarkan to join in this challenge as injury time approaches.[]

Hi @ayijufridar, welcome to thinking and ideas week 2

My Observations:

If only these measures can be adopted, waste management would be a solved problem.
