Celebrating a Milestone — A Nigerian Student Becomes a Medical Doctor After 8 Years of Study
Let me reintroduce, if I've already done so, the latest Nigerian doctor in town, Dr Temi. Our people say if it's easy, run it. Sincerely, it hasn't been an easy journey to study medicine in Nigeria in a federal university where strikes can slow your progress. It's been 8 years down the road, but she made it; her friends made it; her colleagues made it; and her parents made it.
Do you know what it means to sponsor a girl child in a medical school for 8 good years without your money going to waste? That's the joy of every parent. Seeing their children complete their studies after all the stress, hard work, sleepless nights and tense exams. I bet every mother is always the happiest mother when such a thing happens.
I could see tears of joy rolling down from her eyes to show that she was a praying mother, and seeing that her prayers for her daughter were answered was enough reason to break down into tears of abundant joy.
I want to say a big shout-out to my friend who's no longer Temitope but Dr Temitope. Clock it. I was also part of her journey while in the medical field. She strived. She conquered with good grades, and the best graduating student also did well.
It was worth the celebration, and I would say words alone can't express how happy I am for her achieving this milestone. Do you know what it means to become a medical doctor in Nigeria? Let JAMB be your first trial, and you'll see that it's not easy to study a professional course. To even gain an admission, you must put in the work. It doesn't just stop there. The tests, trials, give-up buttons and everything that would make your journey a tough one will surely surface, and guess what? She cleared all odds. Even at the point of giving up, she told herself that she had gone too far to do such a thing.
Congratulations to her once more. If you're intentional about going to medical school, you need to know that it's very possible to succeed. All you need isn't intelligence alone. You need to be smart, you need grace and you need to partner with people who are better than you are.
