SLC-S29/W1-“Thinking and Ideas!| If You Were in Charge!”
I see some villages giving villagers food items to curb hunger. That could be strategic, but it's not addressing the situation or issue of hunger because the food will eventually finish. Why give them fish when you can teach them how to fish? Give them lifetime jobs where they are paid like real workers and not as slaves and are taught how to use and manage their money. If for one thing, it's unemployment. Let me get to the questions first because unemployment has brought about high-class robbers, hookups, and ashawos today because men and ladies want to survive.
If you were given full authority for one year in your community or country, what is the first issue you would address? |
|---|
It's very difficult to be in a position of authority in Nigeria and try to please everyone. You'll definitely do things that can extol your name or bring praise to you. The rich will connect the poor they know for you to help them. The help doesn't get to touch everyone. If I'm in a position of authority, that one issue I'll address is unemployment. Do you know why our leaders have failed to do this? It's because of how corrupt the system is, but they fail to see the bigger picture.
Unemployment in Nigeria is high. Even those that are employed are paid as slaves without value. To me, these ones are as though they aren't employed because how do you expect someone to take care of his family with 20k monthly, and the government isn't doing anything? I won't be on the seat for fame, glory, empowerment, good roads, light, and the like. I know these things are essential, but what we really need the most is independence. I'll see to it that unemployment is eradicated and that those employed are well paid. Even the unemployed will be empowered to work.

This is the issue our government has overlooked, feeling it would be a difficult task. This is the issue I'd want to address because it's the main reason we're suffering today. My tone of writing would change as though I'm in authority. I won't be narrative again.
As the head of this community, the issue I'll solve addresses unemployment, and you know I can't do that on my own. I'll be needing the contributions of you kinsmen to help with ideas on how to go about it, and note that whatever we're discussing here is definitely not about politics or deprivation. If we can address this issue first, the chances of getting other issues addressed would be slim.
Why? Because people will no longer depend on us for certain things. You see these roads? They can come together and build them. Why? Because they are employed, educated, and have the means, including knowing how to spend it wisely. Now why did I choose this issue over others?
Why did you choose this issue over others? |
|---|
In this community, it's clearly seen that we have rising issues to address, which include corruption, bad roads, lack of electricity and basic social amenities, insecurity, food shortages, and increased standards of living. All these need to be addressed, but we need to start somewhere. Unemployment is the root cause of evil. Why and how? I'll state it clearly.
And not that I'm not talking about us, the leaders. I'm talking about the ones we're leading. Why? Because we're in positions of authority, and our bags are always filled at all times. The cravings for generational wealth have made us overlook local issues that should be addressed.
Why is unemployment chosen over others? If a lady is employed and has a well-paying job, do you think she'll expose her body to men just to get money for survival? Nope. If a man is employed with a well-paying job or is empowered, do you think he'll be seen in places where touts discuss carelessly and then eventually join a cult and rob people's houses?

Unemployment has made people do things they are not supposed to do. Unemployment and lack of well-paying jobs have made the standard of living of people increase, not just food. Unemployment breeds insecurity. A well-paid person won't go to people's houses and steal. Unemployment has brought about suffering and food shortages. Unemployment has brought about bad roads and a lack of electricity.

Why? Because if we have people that are employed and well-paid, they won't wait for the government to fix things that are important to them. They'll do so as a community.
So unemployment and lack of a well-paid job are the root causes of all the issues we see in this community. If I tackle that first, I'll definitely solve and address other issues.
Creating jobs for the local people and empowering them to do this work can change their lives for the better. Even though I'll have to empower everyone with phones and laptops so that they can do remote jobs that pay in dollars, or I empower them with physical jobs they can be paid for anytime they work, and this would be an industry or business firm.
It won't be possible to give jobs to everyone at once. If I can start with 100 youths in my community, and after 6 months or a year, these 100 have what it takes to start up a business of their own aside from feeding and other expenses, and then another set enters. This will go a long way.
Most villagers in the village are uneducated, and sending them to school will only make things worse for them. How much free education do we have now? But because these people come from poor homes, they are the most violent, and they breed all kinds of bad behavior. They even create a cult and join. So you see why employment is necessary?

Not just to the youths. I'd think of how the adults and people's parents can be given well-paid jobs too so they can help their families and themselves. If there are some that have businesses already, I'd increase the standard of their businesses so they can be more profitable than they already are. I could even change the location of these businesses to places that are booming. But I'd face a challenging decision, which would be difficult to make.
What is that one difficult decision you would have to make? |
|---|
Every leader or those in positions of authority would want to carve out generational wealth for themselves. After all, other people will lead when one dies at community levels or after some years or tenure. These people will do it; I shouldn't be the Jesus of my time. The state, federal, and local governments in Nigeria have been corrupted, and leaders find it difficult to use funds allocated to them to do things.
Deciding to use the funds I would have smuggled with those in my circle for something I won't even be able to accomplish up to 100% is what would be difficult to do. The thought of accruing this wealth to myself and my generation instead of helping the masses would definitely come. After all, what would be your gain if you did so? This decision will stir a lot of agitation, as enough money would be spent on this for the better.
With how corrupt the governmental system is, they'll calculate the money I would spend on this and give me a picture of how this money can be of better use to me even if it's 10%. They'll say I have 4 years, and I must use them well. If I don't agree with them, they'll want to kill me, or they'll side with other people without my knowledge when it comes to a campaign. How do I explain in such a way that they'll come to an agreement with me and support these plans of mine, as I won't just be implementing this myself?
How would you explain this decision to people who disagree with you? |
|---|
I'll have to meet the tiers of government as the one in control of these tiers and give them my proposal. Would they want to use the money given to them to curb this? Will they want to use the money given to them to increase the salaries of workers? Will school owners use or smuggle the money given to them to increase the pay of private school teachers to at least 150k? Will my estimated budget for this counter my revenue, putting us in debt? I'll give them reasons to think outside the box.
My Voice |
|---|
Picture yourself in the local community. People are fighting for their lives, killing and robbing people to survive, and you're here saying you don't care? Corruption wasn't started by us, but it's better to create a legacy attached to our names than to loot this money. The money will always come even though we're not entirely in control, but what can I do now that I'm giving absolute power? What can I do with my power?
Embezzle them with people that are financially stable and overlook the threatening problems in Nigeria? I agree that this has been ongoing for years and no one has done it. I won't be the sacrificial lamb for everyone. At the same time, where is our conscience? As much as corruption has crept into the government, making it difficult to use these funds, and an issue like this shouldn't hold us back from being that change.
We use funds that could be used to address unemployment to paint and beautify roads and create buildings and estates we'll attach our names to. It's not as if these things are not important, but they are not necessarily important. They are not the needs of the country. The people who make up this country are the country herself. While trying to provide basic social amenities, which is essential, let us try job creation.
Instead of giving out money unnecessarily to people who'll definitely finish it in months, creating lifetime jobs where these unprivileged ones would work would definitely help and curb a lot of pressing issues.
If we create jobs for those in the local community and at the state level and employ them to be receiving payments of 50-100k monthly, do you think insecurity won't reduce? The need for all these protections just to go out will reduce because the people are evidently putting the blame on us. We've increased their standards of living but haven't provided them with money to meet these standards.

To those who aren't paid well, we can allocate some funds to institutions on a yearly basis to increase the salaries of these ones by 50-100% even though it's a private entity.
Questions: Do you think giving jobs to people who are trained robbers will help curb insecurity?
Yes, it depends on the angle you're seeing it, but first they'll have to receive orientation before the work and after they have been paid so they'll know how to plan for their future. We haven't given it a try yet. It would be difficult for a robber to see a sustainable paying job and won't quit that lifestyle by 70% at least and do work they know they can enjoy for this money without curses. They can be channeled to work as securities and also be supervised and educated since removing the old lifestyle may not be totally possible initially.
They'll also see to it that eating money from legitimate sources is the best. That's how I feel, and I think if implemented, it would go a long way. We have 80 million youths without jobs in Nigeria, and every tenure, nobody is saying anything about it. Why won't these 80 million people engage in fraud and all kinds of dubious activities since we ourselves are already engaging in the fraud by looting the money meant to curb issues in Nigeria? Let's give it a rethink.
I think these explanations would go a long way to convince the majority, if not all. Unemployment is a bastard. That's what I'm looking forward to doing this year, starting with Steemit. I won't do it alone, but I'll ensure that teachers are aware of Steemit and can use it to add to the small token they are being paid monthly.

Hi @bossj23, welcome to thinking and ideas week 1
The problem of unemployment has become an issue of concern which has left the young youths to neglect tertiary institutions and focus on making wealth because no time wasted can be recovered.
I hope your government do well.
