SC-S33/W1-Movie Diaries My Favorite Movie OF ALL Time: "Coco" (The Masterpiece I Called Pokoloko)
I have watched many incredible movies, but Disney/Pixar’s Coco (2017) remains my absolute favorite. It beautifully answers deep personal questions I have always had about life after death, where our loved ones go, and what happens when they leave us.

The story follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy living in a vibrant Mexican town during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Miguel secretly dreams of being a musician, but his family enforces a strict, generations-long ban on music. This ban began when his great-great-grandmother, Mamá Imelda, was abandoned by her musician husband to pursue fame, forcing her to start a shoe-making business instead.

Desperate to perform, Miguel discovers a hidden photo suggesting his great-great-grandfather was the famous star, Ernesto de la Cruz. After sneaking into Ernesto’s tomb to borrow his guitar, Miguel is magically transported to the breathtaking Land of the Dead. To return home before turning into a skeleton, he needs a family blessing. Refusing Imelda’s music-free blessing, he flees to find Ernesto.

Along the way, he partners with Héctor, a forgotten skeleton fading toward the "Final Death" because his living daughter, Mamá Coco, is forgetting him. Soon, a dark truth unravels: Ernesto was a fraud who poisoned Héctor, stole his songs, and left him to die. Héctor is Miguel's real great-great-grandfather.

After a chaotic battle where Héctor’s physical photo is lost, Miguel receives an unconditional blessing and returns to the living world. He rushes to his fading great-grandmother Coco and sings "Remember Me", the song Héctor wrote for her. Her memory sparks, she sings along, and she reveals the missing photo piece of Héctor. A year later, music is restored, and Héctor’s legacy lives on.

What I Learned (Lessons from the Story)
Watching Coco provided me with profound life lessons that made me re-evaluate how I view people and situations.
The Danger of False Narratives: Seeing Mamá Imelda’s deep betrayal made me realize how often we make massive life decisions based on assumptions without knowing the actual truth. It made me wonder about the living family left behind with the wrong narrative; if Miguel hadn't broken the cycle, that false bitter history would have been passed down forever.
True Colors and Excuses: Ernesto's character taught me that bad people do not automatically change, and even death does not fix a corrupt soul. Once someone shows you who they truly are, you must accept it and stop making excuses for them.
Nurturing Dreams: I learned the vital importance of pursuing our passions, and why parents must support and guide their children's dreams rather than crushing them.
Cause and Effect: Miguel's journey into the supernatural world reminded me that we do not just exist blindly. Everything happening around us is a consequence of actions taken before.
The Personal Impact
This movie deeply impacted my perspective on family heritage and mortality. The concept of the "Final Death", fading away completely when no one left alive remembers you, shook me. It forced me to look inward and ask myself a heavy question: What will I be remembered for when I am no more? It drove home the importance of honoring my ancestors, keeping family histories alive, and protecting our legacy.
Furthermore, it taught me that our passions are often a divine preparation for something much bigger. If Miguel’s grandmother hadn't broken his guitar, or if he had given up on his dreams, Mamá Coco would have forgotten her father, and Héctor would have ceased to exist. This encourages me never to give up on what I believe in.
My Best Scene:
My favorite part of the entire movie was when Mamá Imelda finally learned the truth, leading to her emotional reunion with Héctor. Having Miguel there to witness it, knowing that his stubborn pursuit of music was the exact reason his broken family was finally healed across two different worlds, was absolutely beautiful and brought tears to my eyes.
The media belongs to Disney/Pixar.
