The Others (Spanish: Los otros) is a 2001 psychological and Gothic horror film written, directed and scored by Alejandro Amenábar, starring Nicole Kidman, Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Eccleston, Elaine Cassidy, Eric Sykes, Alakina Mann and James Bentley.
One of the best elements that "The Others (2001)" excels in, is its atmosphere and palpable psychological unease.
The movie is set post world war two, and tells the story of fiercely devoted mother Grace Stewart, raising her two young children in isolation, within a perpetually fog bound house somewhere in rural England.
The children are inflicted with an acute form of photosensitivity and for this reason, their lives must be shielded in perpetual darkness.
Not long after they arrive the inexplicable starts to occur. Pianos begin playing by themselves, phantom voices can be heard echoing around the house and her children begin seeing the shadowy outlines of visitors.
Grace becomes convinced that her imposing house is haunted by malicious phantoms attempting to torture her family. And her attempt to safeguard her children from these unseen "intruders" is agonizingly suspense filled.
However, it comes to an unforgeteable climax.
During a terrifying confrontation, Grace and her young family walk into their own family seance conducted by the very occupants they believe are to be their house "ghosts."
In a startling twist the medium at the seance, explains the chilling facts: "intruders" who are in actual fact the real new family residing in their former home!
Grace, and her children are the ghosts.
Grace has simply smothered her children and in doing so has become overcome by suicidal despair before taking her own life – a brutal truth, successfully repressed and hidden away.

The twist completely up-ends, and turns on it's head, everything the viewer believes to be occurring. Throughout the entire film we see the 'living,' compassionate and heroic mother Grace attempting to shield her innocent and ailing children from the vengeful and spectral terror.
As one could expect from such as this, the turn in affairs converts this victimized protagonist into her own truly tragic villain.
As a consequence of the big reveal, everything we watch during the film takes a terrifying new meaning.
The children 's 'photosensitivity' wasn't so much as medical affliction, so much so as it had been simply something that had to be done because the 3 people dwelling in the dark were indeed the spirits they proclaimed.
Aided by 3 seemingly bizarre servants they encounter at the outset of the movie -- none other then former owners themselves attempting to guide the despairing Grace towards acceptance of her own fate – Grace's experience transforms, away from simple fight between a family and malevolent specters, into something a more complex and moving tale regarding grief, denial of religious fact and the horrifying repercussions of suppressed trauma.
The children believed their "monsters" to be actual demons whereas in reality they were normal people seeking explanations to paranormal occurrences, all caused by Grace.
My reaction to this twist was one of awe and stupefaction.
I'm fairly sure my mind went blank as the various pieces of the jigsaw fit snugly together to create a shocking, and indeed stunning picture.
I thought I had it all worked out… I'm absolutely positive I convinced myself that at the end of the film the family were going to make their exit having survived a haunting, only for the doors to shut once again to leave them once again facing the peril! It was with absolute delight that I was proven so utterly wrong.
My pulse rate certainly shot up as soon as the medium declared "Grace's real house is this one. She is dead."
The amazing aspect of my response to this revelation wasn't just how shocked I was, but how quickly the terror then subsided and was replaced by one of profound melancholy.
I simply felt overwhelmed by pity for Grace and the truly heavy guilt that now bore witness to her forevermore.This is an exceptionally disturbing and deeply unsettling motion picture that leaves a real chill but also, a great deal of food for thought.
It is quite simply one of the greatest plot twists ever executed in my opinion.
It's ability to have evoked not only shock but such sorrow too is truly incredible, that the movie prompted such a tangible human response from me that had my hands glued to my head had me itching for a re-run as I reeled from the clever allusions so meticulously crafted throughout the dialogue, and the dimly lit ambiance, from my head to my toes!
