A sincere thanks to my dear maโam @ninapenda for organizing this amazing Steemit challenge. It truly means a lot to me to be part of this wonderful Nigerian community. I hope my words bring warmth, happiness and positive energy to all of you.
Name one practice, belief, or system that people accept as normal but should be questioned. |
|---|
There are many traditions and systems in society that we generally take for granted, but in reality they need to be questioned. A prime example is social expectations regarding gender behavior and sexuality. Most people unthinkingly assume that the roles of men and women are predetermined: men are powerful, decision makers and bear social responsibilities; Woman represents domestic responsibilities, obedience and silence.
This thinking not only restricts the rights of the womens but also alienates men from their emotional and human capacities. When we accept such beliefs without research and questioning, injustice, violence, and unequal opportunities arise in the society.
Therefore it is the responsibility of every individual to question traditional systems, social expectations and unjust beliefs. We have to develop critical thinking to create a society. It based on the principles of equality, justice and the freedom. The questioning reflecting on the practices and calling for positive change is the first step to social improvement. In this way we can create a more humane and prosperous society.
Why do you think people rarely challenge it? |
|---|
The people often do not challenge such systems or beliefs. Because they remain silent due to societal pressure, tradition and fear. From childhood we are taught that "this is normal". That is considered rude or wrong to question it. People fear that they may face criticism, backlash, or isolation. If they challenge norms or social expectations.
Also, human nature is often resistant to change. People feel comfortable in old ways and beliefs, because they know that it is easy to follow and accepting it brings instant acceptance in society. So very few people dare to fearlessly raise questions or take a new path, even if it is logical and correct.
Therefore, most people avoid challenging such systems and beliefs due to social pressure, fear and old habits, and only a few are able to raise their voice for change.
What could improve if this โnormalโ way changed? |
|---|
If this "norm" of social and gender attitudes is changed. Then many positive changes can occur in society. First equal opportunities will be created for both women and men. The each individual will be able to make independent decisions about education, career and personal life according to their abilities and interests.
So as a result the justice and equality in society will increase. The people will be able to express their feelings, ideas and creativity without fear. Incidents of violence, prejudice and injustice will be reduced. When people will value each other based on their character, morals and abilities not on the basis of gender or social expectations.
Moreover both the men and women will be able to share equally in emotional and social responsibilities. It will improve family, society and overall social development.
Ultimately this change will bring not only individual freedom and prosperity but also a more humane, creative and prosperous society. Where everyone has opportunities according to their identity and worth besties.
What might be lost if it disappeared completely? |
|---|
This "normal" system is disappear completely if. Then some things could potentially be lost. First some people will initially lose their guidance and boundaries. Then as a result of this change because old traditions and systems often provide a kind of structure and order in life. For some individuals this change may initially cause confusion or insecurity. This is especially for those who have lived according to these traditions for a long time.
Moreover, some people may feel threatened by elements of cultural or historical identity, as traditions are often linked to a society's identity and history. However, this loss may be temporary and limited, as a more equitable and fair system would provide greater benefits in the long run.
Therefore although old boundaries and certain cultural conveniences may be temporarily lost. The society will be replaced by a firm foundation of freedom, justice and human worth. The initial effects of change will be temporary, but in the long run a more prosperous, creative and equal society will emerge.
Friends, this is my participation. I hope you appreciate it. I look forward to reading your valuable feedback.

Hi @elsa-queen, welcome to thinking and ideas week 4
This is seen everywhere, men are always seen as the head, and they should have all the respects but for the women, we deserve nothing but being slaves. Women are treated less of themselves and so it should be known by all that this singular act is devastating, except for some family who do not welcome such.
Everyone should be treated equally without the fear of loosing oneself!
