Honestly, sometimes little ideas can surely solve big problems. It's not every problem that exists needs government billions or heavy technology to Amend the problem. One little step can change life for a lot of people. As them always talk, “A drops of water would Surely fulls a container with patience”. So today I want to talk about one problem which do disturb , but some of us don't really notice it just because we are used to it here in Nigeria.

The Problem I Choose: Street Hawking

Street hawking is one of the most common things in Nigeria. Therefore, some children, teenagers, and even adults run after cars on busy roads just to sell gala, pure water, groundnut, bread, and other items. At first, it looks like it's just a normal daily hustle, but in reality it is really a serious problem we should looked up to.

Truth be told this Hawkers risk their lives daily. Many children miss school because they spend all the whole day hawking on the street to sell and earn for their selves or their parents. This will make them to have suffers too from health. Because standing under the hot sun, inhaling the dust and fumes on the roads, or getting drenched in rain weakens their bodies systems.

Also the drivers also face distractions, and accidents can happen when hawkers chase moving vehicles. Beyond this, street hawking damages Nigeria’s image, showing outsiders that we are full of poverty and poor organization which is not right.

My Simple Solution I suggest

The solution I'll suggest is Community Mini-Markets supported by Road Security Patrols and a Rotational Selling System.

  • Community Mini-Markets: Instead of people hawking on the roadside, each community can set up a small selling spaces in clean and very safe areas like school compounds after the classes as been end, or an open fields. With this Families will bring their goods there, and buyers will know exactly where to go and buy things when they need it. This will keeps the business alive but removes danger from the road too.

  • Having Road Security Patrols: However ,Local security officers or community vigilantes should always monitor busy roads. Their role is to stop all kinds of hawking completely and redirect the sellers to the mini-markets that is available nearby. This enforcement will ensures discipline and makes sure there's no child or adult that will be able to risks their life chasing cars because hawking and selling on the road.

  • Creating Rotational Selling System:However, Families can just do well to take turns selling in this mini-markets. For example, if one family sells on Monday, another family will sell on Tuesday. This way,the children will only help occasionally and still have time to attend school regularly.

  • Community Incentives: To make the mini-markets lively, elders can organize a small competitions like “Cleanest Stall of the Week” or “Best Seller of the Month.” And Winners will get recognition or small prizes from the community. This kind of motivation will motivates families to participate and keeps the market attractive and busy and also clean.

Who Will Benefit Most

The biggest beneficials will be the children, who will no longer risk their lives chasing cars and will have more time for their school.

Families too will benefit because they can still earn money safely and spend less on hospital bills.

Communities too will gain cleaner streets, smoother traffic, and fewer accidents, while also building unity through this Thier shared market spaces pattern.

Finally, Nigeria as a whole will benefits because visitors will see organized markets instead of risky hawking on the roadside, improving the country’s image. As the proverb says, “Its a hand that is safe will always eat better.”

Possible Challenges

Some families might not like it just because they believe that roadside sales bring faster money.

  • Finding open space in crowded areas may also be very difficult to achieve.

  • Communities will need to contribute small amounts to maintain the mini-markets and support security patrols too.

  • Consistency is another challenge; if families stop using this mini-markets, hawking may return back.

But with strong leadership, cooperation, and enforcement, these obstacles can be managed. “Quick money do finish quick,” so families must learn that safer, steady income is better than risky hustle.

My Final Thoughts

Street hawking is more than just a hustle; it is a serious problem that affects safety, education, health, and Nigeria’s reputation. But the solution does not really require advanced technology or huge government spending which some people might think of. But With community mini-markets, road security patrols, rotational selling systems, and community incentives, we can protect children, support families, and build pride in our communities.

Yes, challenges will exist, but the benefits are far greater. Therefore In the end, the message is still clear: “Thinking and Little Ideas can bring Simple Solutions to big Problems"

Hi @emishael60, welcome to thinking and ideas week 2

My Observations:

You've got a nice proposal here. Hawkers on the street especially the children, are usually at risk. I do see how these hawkers run around major roads like death isn't possible all because of money.

I agree with you in all the possible solutions to get rid of hawking. It is very simple abd achievable. Such thing has started happing in one of the states in Nigeria currently. I hope it stays.
