Horror film is something I always avoid because I don't like fear that will disturb my sleep. But because of this task, I carried a courage to watch a watch a supernatural horror film entitled; Light out, directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by James Wan, Lawrence Grey, and Eric Heisserer. The film is an expansion of Sandberg’s short film of the same name, and Warner Bros. Was release on July 2016.

Therefore in this movie Teresa was Rebecca, while Gabriel Bateman act as Martin, Maria Bello act as Sophie, Billy as Paul, and Alexander as Bret. However, the so call villain in the movie was named Diana, which played by Alicia, a ghostly figure in the movie that only appear when the light is off.

🤔 Why I don’t always or usually watch this genre?

However, I do always tried to avoid horror movies, no matter how interesting people say ur is,because it's disturbs my peace of mind. Therefore, anytime I watch horror:

  • I always feel like the scary scenes will follow me to my dream at night.

  • The sudden sound effect of this horror movies always makes my heart to jump like NEPA light that just flash and go off.

  • I don't always enjoy seeing strange creatures or ghostly shadows that chase people.

Instead of relaxing, horror movies do makes me tense. That’s why I do prefer comedy like Aki and Pawpaw or action like John Wick or adventures movies. Those ones really makes me to laugh and ginger my body. Truly I say, all this horror movies always makes me to really feel like I'm inside a very bad nightmare.

🎥 Did This Movie Change My Mind or Confirm My Feelings?

Watching Lights Out confirm some of my fear but also change my mind a little. The film shows me how Diana, the ghost, do attack anytime the light goes off. That make me realize that horror can play with everyday things like electricity.

These movie change my mind with some of these scene.

  • Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) was the main character which really try to protect her younger brother Martin. She was strong but also struggling with her past.

  • Martin (Gabriel Bateman) A small boy that suffer because his mother Sophie was mentally unstable and was communicating with Diana.

  • Sophie (Maria Bello) Was the mother which has the connection with Diana since childhood. Her weakness do allow the ghost to torment the family.

  • Paul (Billy Burke) Was Rebecca’s and Martin's father which died early in the film after Diana attack him.

  • Bret (Alexander DiPersia) Was Rebecca’s boyfriend which did well to support her during the fight against Diana.

The film really show family bond inside the horror. Rebecca wasn't just fighting the ghost for a price, she was fighting to save her brother from trauma. That emotional side make me to respect the genre more.

😲 What Surprised Me Most About the Film

The biggest surprise was how ordinary light switch can become a weapon. Normally, I do off light before sleeping at night. But in this Lights Out movie, switching bulb on was the only way to survive, just imagine that.

  • When Rebecca use flashlight to chase Diana, I realize that small torch which we do use during NEPA blackout means something.

  • The suspense was really strong — imagine a person off bulb and immediately the shadow appear.

  • Another surprise was how the film balance fear with emotion. The mother sacrifice herself at the end to save her children. No doubt this particular scene really shock me because as I know ,horror movies don't usually show that kind of deep family love in it. It always shows fight and struggles only and who wins at last

Also the great cinematography by Marc Spicer and music by Benjamin Wallfisch added much emotions into the tension in the movie. And the silence before Diana appear in the movie really makes the fear stronger.

🎬 Would I Try More Movies From This Genre in the Future and Why?

1000147131.jpg

Yes, but with some condition. I won't just watch any horror film which is full of blood and scream. I will look for ones which has strong story and lesson like Lights Out.

  • If horror can mix suspense with family or social message, I will watch it.

  • If it will only focus on shocking people with blood, I will do well to avoid it.

Reason is that, film that shows me horror can be more than fear. It can teach a person about courage, unity, and sacrifice. So I will open a little door for horror, but I will still be careful so that I won't watch the one that will give me some sleepless night.

Thanks to you @ruthjoe for bringing this movie challenge on. I always avoid horror movies, but now it has open my eye. Sometimes the genre we do avoid can surprise us with deep lesson. Watching Lights Out make me realize that horror can show us how strong we can be when danger comes. Ordinary light switch which we use every day can one day becomes a symbol and key of survival.
