How I survived difficult moment*
Share with us a difficult moment in your life you faced
Life is not always smooth; and my greatest nightmare came when I encountered that prolonged and fuzzy period between the end of my secondary school and further learning; as I finished my final exams in 2020, my hopes soaring, I unexpectedly plunged into a phase of waiting that lasted years.
The waiting was a torment as the weeks and months turned into years of a sense of overwhelming despair andhopelessness; as I watched friends and neighbors forge ahead in their lives while mine remained stationary, I felt mentally and emotionally drained from the constant scrutiny from well-meaning individuals coupled with an unsettling feeling and anxiety about my unknown future, making me feel like a prisoner pacing a room with no doors while my dreams of university and career slowly faded into the air.
How did you survive that moment? Tell us what you did or did not do.
In relation to overcoming the stillness of the period in my life, it had been an attitude adjustment; external circumstances are out of one's control but the time and space provided for one to exist in is completely within the control of the individual.
*What I did: I chose to actively utilize the time afforded to me; I had to engage in people online to exchange thoughts with and receive comments from. I had to interact, engage, and even consume other people's views. Engaging in daily online writing prompts and contests provided a form of structure to the use of my time, and I have chosen to devote most of the time to acquiring skills; more precisely skills to help me learn more about farming.
I persevered through academics, and kept knocking at their doors till it was opened.
*What I didn't do: I decided not to allow the state of my circumstances to define me and not to lose myself over how people my age, my time, are doing well and I'm stuck doing nothing and feel depressed and disheartened. You don't need to race through life.
What your advice for any one going through a difficult time right now?
My advice is if you ever find yourself fighting your way through a very difficult period, just know that you are not a failure if the still period in your life is not the end but a preparing stage, be kind to yourself and do not allow it to break you. In the first place, accept that the still periods are not supposed to be seen as failure but preparation time and do not let it make you see yourself as a failure.
Secondly, get involved with that one thing you have power over on a daily basis, it could be a book you are reading or a new skill you are trying to acquire, it can even be engaging friends online to form a supportive system, however you chose to fight it is a fight you have to undertake, these actions would be your weapons to fight your inner battles against the anxiety of helplessness and lack of progress; remember, your journey will never be the same as any other person's and you don't have to allow it bother you as long as you are progressing, don't compare your worth to anyone's timeline, just keep on moving and preparing, dawn will certainly come.
