Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 130: In the Midst of Crisis!
What does the phrase “In the midst of crisis” mean to you? Share your understanding in your own words.
The term in the midst of crisis refers to being at the heart of a traumatic or crippling event in which things appear unpredictable, stressful, or even uncontrollable. That is when issues are not only knocking but already coming and you have to take action regardless of whether you are ready or not. It is to me a period of extreme stress, where every word, choice and move counts. It is as well a time when one gets tested on their strength, patience and clarity in thinking despite any confusion or fear.
When in the midst of crisis, what do you usually do, like the first thing you do? How do you handle it? (It can be personal, academic, financial, or emotional.)
Whenever I find myself in the midst of a crisis, it is the first action that I resort to take a break and relax. I have also learned that taking over the issue without considering it at all may only aggravate the situation although this may seem to be an urgent situation. in which case I take deep breaths and endeavor to know what is going on. It is here that I begin to think in terms of the situation; what led to the problem and what is necessary or must be done at the very moment and what can be defered.
I can invite assistance of a trusted person including a friend, family member or mentor depending on the nature of the crisis. I also make efforts to be solution-oriented rather than spending much time contemplating on the issue. To illustrate, a case of academic crisis such as failing a test, I would analyze the outcomes of the failure and develop a strategy to change it.
Do you believe crises make people stronger or weaker? Explain your view.
I believe that it may strengthen or weaken people basing on how they respond to crises. Crises are seen by most people as growth opportunities. They make people leave comfort zone and force them to make themselves resilient, problem solving people and become emotionally strong. Once an individual has experienced a crisis and has learned something, he will be stronger and better prepared to face crisis in future. But when an individual is overwhelmed and gives up, a crisis can make him or her feel the weaker or defeated. Therefore, according to me, it is not the crisis that makes or breaks but the attitude of the individual in it and their behavior.
What lesson(s) did you learn from that experience, and how has it shaped you today?
Due to the experiences of crises, I managed to learn several useful lessons. Among the most important lessons that should be mentioned, one should note the necessity to stay calm and think logically regardless of the seeming incoherence. Another thing that I learnt was that there is nothing wrong with asking people to help and no one has to handle the hard times alone. The other thing that was learnt is that every crisis is a lesson learnt about me and my strengths, my weaknesses and how I can be better in doing it. These experiences have been able to transform me into being more patient and tougher and capable of delivering under pressure. Now, I am viewing problems with more optimistic and determined mentalities as I now understand that even difficult circumstances can lead to my personal growth.
