Do you agree that being honest is costly? Has it ever caused some e.g pain or regret?

I cannot state that I have been in such a situation myself, however, I do concur that it is sometimes costly to be honest. Honesty is emotionally, socially and even professionally dangerous, especially in cases where it goes against the expectations or creates ugly reality. People will get injured, love will be broken and opportunities will be missed.

However, the instant pain of telling the truth is likely to be erased by the pain in the future. Cheating may seem to be an easy task but it will leave a heavier burden to come later such as conscience, mistrust and sophisticated consequences. Though honesty can bring some discomfort and some loss, it gets credibility, self respect and get better contacts in the long run. The cost of truthfulness in such a sense is real, but the cost of non-truthfulness is far greater in a more mundane sense since it concerns the greatest number of human beings.

Can you be honest without hurting people's feelings?

Yes, but there are certain options of empathy instead of telling the truth whose ability to tell the truth would not offend people. The first thing is to establish what you mean, is it to do good, or to prove to be right? Apply positive terms, talk less of persons and more of behaviors and make criticisms look like motivation and not a punishment. The point of time also matters, personal individual discussions are better than a lot of comments.

Listening is just as significant as talking, once individuals are capable of listening to them, they will be open with them. And lastly, it is necessary to keep in mind, that kindness never undermines the truth, on the contrary, it makes it more potent. Good honesty is a magic since it builds trust, keeps you in relationships and on the other hand will keep you honest to yourself. Such a balance makes you grow, and makes other people feel secure at any time.

Have you ever told a lie to protect someone?

Yes I have deceived and covered up somebody and I do not feel guilty. Honesty is sometimes more harmful than helpful and this especially when the truth can be painful, frightening or dangerous to bring. At that moment, I chose to do something nice instead of telling the truth to the patient and believed that it was more human to save a life of a person by not causing him/her pain.

I was not trying to cheat them in my favor but to give them time, security and serene mind. Even though, I admire the truth, I believe that responsibility is not less significant. It was so as to do what is right to benefit the person I cared about although I had to bear the pressure on my own. Love may be one thing and in some cases this will be the choice to keep silent and to speak all the truth.

Is it okay to keep a secret if it could hurt someone?

People would not normally keep secrets that may harm them. Honesty and privacy are quite significant yet they cannot be valued more than the security of another individual. It is dangerous sometimes to have a secret; then the secret keeping can be the same as a contribution to the problem. It is not required that every potentially damaging scenario should be raised at this very moment and place. The important thing is doing the good thing: persuade the individual to be good himself, speak to a trusted person, counselor, or report the problem in case it has not disappeared. When it comes to keeping secrets, other people are in the first position. It is not always an easy task to be honest.
