Hi Movie Lovers!

It's my pleasure to be part of the week 4 challenge on Movie highlight with the theme: "Genre Flip."

I must confess, this week's task has pushed me out of my comfort zone and into a genre I normally avoid. For me, the genres include: Horror and Drama/Thriller, especially the emotional and intense ones. I always choose my peace, which is comedy, or adventure, because they help me relax, but this challenge encouraged me to try something different.

For my genre flip, I chose one of the most popular Nigerian movies "Elevator Baby" starring Toyin Abraham and Timini Egbuson. The movie is a psychological thriller, a genre I normally run away from, because it's often too emotionally charged. But I decided to give it a try anyway.

Why I Usually Avoid This Genre:

I'm an Emotional person, so I used to be emotionally drained by drama/thriller. They usually feel too serious and intense, and I don't want to watch any movie that will affect my mood negatively for a whole day. Unlike comedy or romance, you will just watch and laugh; in thrillers, you will feel the character's pain, tension, fear, and pressure. So I used to think this is not my thing, it's not good for my heart and peace.

But as I said before, I've stepped out of my comfort zone this week and it felt good 😊

About The Movie:

Elevator Baby tells a story about a young rich guy who was daring and spoiled. He feels entitled to everything.

He was stuck in an elevator with one underprivileged pregnant woman, named Abigail (Toyin Abraham), who suddenly went into labor. Dare was rude in nature, but the situation in the elevator forced him into a life-changing experience, he was the one helping Abigail deliver her baby inside the elevator.

The tension, fear, panic, and emotions in the film were high. Yet I must say the story felt so real and touching, it's meaningful and beautifully acted.

Did The Movie Change My Mind Or Confirm My Feelings?

Hmmm surprisingly, it does!

You know, I was thinking that I'll be overwhelmed or irritated by the tension, but instead, I admired the storyline. The story teaches me empathy, responsibility, and growth. Dare began as a spoilt, reckless kid, but the situation forces him to mature quickly. It reminded me that sometimes uncomfortable experiences can help us grow.

The emotions were not as deep as I expected; they were moderate and meaningful. Instead of draining me, I was left thinking deeply. So yes, I think I will give a similar genre a try some other time.

What Surprised Me Most About The Film?

So many things surprised me:

1. I was surprised by Toyin Abraham's Performance, I knew before now that she was a good actress, but she was exceptional in this particular movie. Her expressions, fear, pains, and strength made the situation feel so real.

2. The Tight Focus Storyline amazed me, could you imagine almost the entire movie happens inside an elevator! Yet it wasn't boring. It was engaging from start to finish.

3. It was heartwarming watching the emotional transformation that took place in Dare; someone so arrogant became compassionate within a few hours. Goodness, the character development was surprising and believable.

4. The Humor: Despite all the tension, the film still found some moments to make me smile. So I'm amazed by that balance.

Would I Try More Movies From This Genre In The Future?

Absolutely! Yes, I would.

The movie teaches me something new about drama thrillers some can be inspiring and thought-provoking, instead of a stressful idea I always carry on my head.

They teach lessons that stay with me longer. Well I might not completely switch to this genre, but I'm now seeing it in another light, I'm now more open to exploring similar Nigerian movies. Maybe the likes of:

  • Blood Sisters
  • The wait
  • The setup
  • Oloture

Thanks Ruthjoe for this challenge, I have discovered a completely new side of Nollywood storytelling.

Trying something new is not always comfortable, but it could lead to a pleasant surprise. "Elevator Baby" has changed my view of drama/thrillers, I'm glad this week I could face my film fears. That is what this challenge is all about, stepping out of the familiar & embracing something new.

Thanks for reading me. I wish everyone who loves to join this contest success!

I'm inviting my friends @heriadi @lhorgic and @wilmer1988 to be part of this contest
