Watch a directorial debut or a breakout film.

Pushpaka Vimana (Kannada) or Pesum Padam (Tamil)

I would call this a directorial film or a break-down film because, In a time when films were made based on music and songs, the director has told many stories in this film without any dialogue or song.

Are dialogues important in cinema?
In the early days, the story of the film was told through actions, just as this film directed as dialogue-free. I am going to write about this film that received a lot of acclaim here.

The film is a 1987 film directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and starring Kamal Haasan, Amala and others. The film is a dialogue-free film. The film was released in Kannada in 1987 under the name Pushpaka Vimana. The film received a good response and good collections when it was released. The film ran for 35 weeks in Bengaluru.

What stood out most about the director’s style or storytelling?

The entire film seems like a beautiful parable. But there is no didactic tone anywhere. The director has conveyed his message to the audience perfectly through many small scenes. For this film, we must give the first credit to director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The era of silent films was over, technology grew and cinema started talking, in 1927. But even after 60 years, it took a rugged artistic mind to experiment with making a film without dialogue. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao had that.

Plot

The young man lives with all the poverty, embarrassment and trivialities of middle-class life combined. (None of the characters in this film have names). He lives in a crowded hostel. In the morning, he has to go to the toilet. Even if he stands there holding his stomach, if he feels a little uncomfortable, the person coming from behind will enter. The barking of dogs is a continuous music all night. To make matters worse, the TV sound of kung fu fights from the lower floor is blaring all night. On the way out, he has to cross the sewer. The name of the hostel surrounded by all these abuses is ‘Ananda Bhavan’.

Sometimes, he is happy that he gets to see the scene of the downstairs girl changing clothes through the upper window, which is one of the small pleasures of living here. The young man, who is passing his days gritting his teeth because he cannot find a job, one day sees a man lying on the road. A rich man. In his coat pocket is the key to a five-star hotel. The young man has admired the hotel from the outside. Now a sudden idea flashes through the young man's mind. He decides to put it into action. He takes the drunkard and ties him up in his hotel room and makes him lie down. He pours alcohol on him so that he doesn't wake up. Then he takes the hotel key and goes there to enjoy the luxurious life. He also finds love there.

But will this temporary luck last? What happened in the end is told in very interesting scenes.

Did the film feel polished or raw? How did that impact your experience?

I felt this film is original and tried something new.....
The entire film seems like a beautiful parable. But there is no didactic tone anywhere. Since there are no dialogues in this film, the contribution of the actors is very important. The audience should be told what is happening through their body language, facial expressions, acting, etc. Since there is no language problem, Srinivasa Rao sought out talented actors from many states. Let's not even talk about Kamal's acting skills in this sequence. Since Amala studied dance at Kalakshetra, she had a natural ability to express emotions through facial expressions. So in the first scene where the two meet, Kamal rejects the earrings that Amala tries on in the jewelry store with his own eyes, then gestures as if he has 'good' for the last one, and suddenly the feeling of 'why should I seek approval from a foreign man?' comes, Amala suddenly withdraws, and then when she sees Kamal outside the store, she pulls her hair and hides the earrings in her ear... these are poetic moments throughout the film.

Would you watch more movies by this director? Why or why not?

I have also seen another film directed by him, called "ApoorvaSagothararkal", in which Kamal Haasan played the lead role. They have put together different things. Kamal Haasan plays three characters, and in one of them, Kamal Haasan plays a dwarf. At that time, everyone looked at it differently, wondering how that was possible.

What message or theme did you take away from the movie?

The director has conveyed his message to the audience perfectly through many small scenes. Let me give you an example scene. This film takes place during a period of unemployment. A large number of people are standing in a queue in front of a company for a job opportunity. One of them goes away to spit, and this young man goes and stands there. The man turns back and stares at him. He makes way for him and stands behind him. But the people standing in the queue move him one by one and send him back. In the end, he loses the place he was already standing in and has to go to the end of the still long queue. Due to this, the job opportunity is also lost. Isn't the justice in this understandable? This is what the film also says through various scenes. 'Don't look for a shortcut'.

Similarly, the hero of film poor young man will always see a beggar and be happy that he has more money than him and will show him his money. But when the beggar shows him the thousands of money he has saved, he will bow his head in amazement. At one point, the beggar dies. When the corporation workers lift his body to carry him away, the money he has saved falls down and scatters. Then his penance is thrown on the road and everyone takes the money. Then he will learn a lesson, that is, people value money more than people. No matter how much we save, we are not valued, money is valued.
