Name one practice, belief, or system that people accept as normal but should be questioned.

"Education is only for jobs."

Many families in our society believe that the main purpose of education is to get a good job. From a young age, children are taught in their families that they need to study to get a good job. Gradually, this trend is ingrained in our children's minds. I think this belief should be questioned.

Education is not just a means to get us a job; it makes us wise, aware, and responsible. Through education, we learn to judge good and bad, learn new things, and develop our thinking skills. If we study only for a job, the real purpose of education is lost.

It is not that "everyone will want to work again". After completing their education, some will become entrepreneurs, some artists, some writers, some researchers. Through these, it is also possible to develop society. Therefore, it is not right to limit education to just jobs. I have mentioned these things from my real life. My parents were worried about me since I was a child. I was a very weak student. But I understood technical subjects and Mathematics well, so I studied engineering. Now I feel that I need to become an entrepreneur.

In fact, the main goal of education should be to become a better person, to improve one's skills, and to do useful work for society. Work is just a part of life, not everything in life. I still give this advice to my well-wishers. Don't pursue a job after studying; become an entrepreneur.

Why do you think people rarely challenge it?

People rarely challenge the idea that “education is just for jobs” because there are a few practical reasons. I have mentioned a few reasons below.

  • Family expectations: Our parents, from their own experience, consider a job to be the source of success. So they put the same pressure on their children. For example, my parents work, so they advised me to get a job after completing my education from a young age.
  • Social pressure: When people in our society say, "Study well, get a good job", that seems natural to us. If you think differently, people in society criticize you. So I think social pressure is a major reason.
  • Lack of proper guidance: Many students do not know that there are many better paths other than jobs after completing their education. We are not taught these subjects in schools and colleges. As a result, a student rushes to get a job after completing his education and does not think about other things.
  • Fear of failure: When you try something new, there is a risk. People don't want to fail, so they choose jobs as a safe path. I have come to understand this especially after talking to many new employees in my office.
  • Fear of financial security: Many families in our society want their children to grow up and create a secure income path after completing their education. A job means regular salary, a secure life. So they are afraid to think of other ways. Parents of the family do not want to understand that they can earn more without a job, and do not want to take risks.

What could improve if this “normal” way changed?

Changing this common perception that “education is only for jobs” will bring about great improvements in our society and personal lives. People will become self-reliant and skilled. In addition, the unemployment rate will decrease by creating new employment opportunities. New businesses and entrepreneurs will be created. The mental stress of a person who has completed their education will decrease. In our society, a student will no longer be disappointed in finding a job after completing their education.

New ideas will be created among the students. As a result, they will try to do research and discover something new. This will increase the skills of the people of the society or the country. The dependency of the people will decrease. The country will improve economically.

What might be lost if it disappeared completely?

If the idea of "education is only for jobs" completely disappears, then some good aspects as well as some important things may be lost. For example, the number of members in the country's security forces will decrease. The number of skilled people in important professions like doctors and engineers will decrease. If this idea is completely lost, especially security risks will increase. So I think that after completing education, a balance should be maintained in other subjects along with jobs. After completing their education, some students should focus on entrepreneurship and research work along with jobs.

I agree with you, sir, about education being driven by concerns about finding a job. A diploma is merely proof that someone attended school, not a guarantee of employment. This aligns with your statement: education makes us wise, aware, and responsible by shifting our mindset from concepts and theories to concrete actions.

All financial fears are linked to school! It seems to be a place that provides certain hope for everyone, and this has long been a part of our culture. Unemployment isn't due to a lack of jobs, but to the disconnect between education and employment. A "Bachelor of education" is forced to work as a scavenger to provide for his family, is consequence of viewing school as a financial goal.

Yes, success isn't solely determined by the classroom or school setting; creating new jobs involves skills, experience, and hard work. Many companies value real-world abilities over formal academic degrees.

wish you success, Mr. @mahadisalim

¡Holaaa amigo!🤗

Hi @mahadisalim (79), welcome to thinking and ideas week 4

My Observations:

Well, we have been told that when you are educated, you have the opportunity of getting good job offer but today, good jobs are only for people with connections. While most educated people without connections, learn a skill or use their talents to start a living.
