My Neighborhood Watch #138 - Reporting Events Around us
Good day everyone,
Welcome to my blog. Today, I bring to you my neighborhood watch report from Lagos State, Nigeria.
A Quiet Market Season
Recently, I observed something unusual in my area — the market has become unusually quiet and less active. Normally, this area is full of movement: cars passing, traders calling customers, and buyers negotiating prices.
But now?
The roads look dry.
Fewer vehicles.
Low customer turnout.
And many traders sitting idle.
The reason? The fasting season.
Ramadan and Christian Fasting Period
We are currently in a period where many Muslims are observing Ramadan, while some Christians are also participating in their fasting season.
According to my Muslim friend, fasting begins around 6:30 AM and ends around 7:00 PM. They eat before dawn and then break their fast in the evening.
For my Christian friend observing a 6–6 fast, it runs from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
This has significantly affected buying patterns in the market.
Changes in Buying Behavior
From my observation:
- Many people buy food items very early in the morning before fasting begins.
- Evening hours (after 7 PM) are now busier than afternoon periods.
- Food vendors have shifted their major sales to evening time.
- Drink and bottled water sellers now open very early for those preparing before fasting starts.
One of my friends, Ezekiel, who runs a small business, complained that sales have reduced drastically. He even joked that he sleeps most of the day — not because he is sick, but because there are no customers.
This shows how religious activities can directly influence local economic flow.
My Personal Reflection
At first, I thought the market was simply “boring.” But looking deeper, I realized it is actually a period of spiritual discipline for many people.
Business owners like us just need to adjust our strategy:
- Open earlier
- Focus more on evening sales
- Sell items that suit fasting needs
Adaptation is key.
Conclusion
Whether fasting or not, health remains very important. I wish all my Muslim and Christian friends a successful fasting season and may their prayers be answered.
As for me… let me quickly find something to eat before someone starts staring at my breakfast again. 😄

Nice write up my dear brother, we are in fasting period where Muslims are expected to abstain from drinking, smoking, eating and other type of thing that can spoil our fasting. In fact fasting boost economy activity where most of the people went early to the market before the sunrise. The area where their is largest population of Muslim enjoy most because they understand that fasting is ongoing as well as also increase their sale in the evening when the Muslim would break their fast.
You're actually correct.....but you know the funny part?
2 of my friend are Muslim...... imagined how I finished a full plate of food and they're just there staring at me😂
Meanwhile on a normal day.......we had to be running across the street with plate of food. It's only my heart that can describe the excitement. 😂
