‎From the images above, it is clear where waste is being dumped. It is not hidden behind houses or dumped in a corner. It is right on the road divider, where cars, bikes, pedestrians, traders, and even children pass every day.

Choose a global or local problem (education, waste, traffic, unemployment, loneliness, etc.).

‎This act has been done several times now, we have tried to report to the estate management about this, but nothing changed, so I chose waste management as the local problem I want to talk about in this post.

At night, people dump their waste there and leave, most likely when no one is around to stop them. By morning, the road becomes busy again, and the waste remains there until the next day. If LAWMA, the agency responsible for waste management, does notarrivee on time to clear it,*people continue to dump more refuse until it almost takes up half of the road.

‎This is not something that happened once. It has been going on for a long time. People have gradually accepted that spot as a dumping point, even though they know it is wrong.

‎The purpose of this post is to show that a simple problem like this can be controlled without advanced technology. With a simple agreement among people in the area, that same spot can be managed instead of being ignored.

How this waste affect the environment

‎Before talking about solutions, it is important to look at the consequences of this habit.
‎What am I saying self, this waste dump is directly opposite my shop. Many customers struggle to stay once they notice the smell and the sight of the waste. There was even a time when a ritual calabash with drinks was found there, which made people uncomfortable and suspicious.

Some of the effects include:

Traffic obstruction:
‎When the waste increases, some of it spreads onto the main road. Some drivers drive over it, while others slow down suddenly, which disrupts traffic flow.

Bad smell for nearby residents and traders:
‎The smell can become unbearable, especially during hot weather.

Drainage blockage during rainfall:
‎When it rains heavily, waste close to the gutter is washed inside, blocking water flow and causing flooding.

Health risks:
‎The environment becomes unhealthy for people who pass through the area daily, increasing the risk of diseases.

Propose a simple, realistic solution that does not rely on advanced technology

‎I believe the government and LAWMA have done their part to some extent. They cannot monitor every road at all times. This problem requires cooperation from the community.

‎Instead of installing CCTV cameras or using advanced technology, I propose the following simple solutions:

‎1. Organize a community or residents’ meeting to address the issue together.
‎2. Agree on a specific and proper waste collection point and inform LAWMA so that waste can be picked up regularly.
‎3. Introduce simple monitoring, where anyone caught dumping waste on the road is warned or fined.
‎4. Encourage community contribution to support regular waste collection.
‎5. Practice the idea of “if you see something, say something,” to discourage nighttime dumping.

‎This approach helps keep the environment clean, safe, and healthy. It also protects nearby businesses from being affected.

Who would benefit most from this solution?

‎I would personally benefit because my shop is directly affected. Customers often leave immediately after noticing the waste opposite the shop.

Drivers would enjoy a clearer road and smoother movement.
‎Traders and market sellers would have a cleaner environment for business.
Pedestrians, students, cyclists, okada riders, and keke drivers would all benefit from cleaner air and safer roads.

‎In general, everyone who passes through the area would benefit.

What possible challenges or limitations do you think your idea might face?

IMG_20260121_163227_165.jpg Clean road, same place, no waste

‎No solution works perfectly.

‎Some people may refuse to cooperate or claim they cannot afford to contribute.
‎Night dumping may still happen, especially when monitoring is weak.
‎If waste is not collected regularly, the dumping point may quickly overflow again.
‎Monitoring requires consistency, not just rules.

‎Despite these challenges, this solution can reduce the problem significantly if people take responsibility.

Conclusion

‎This waste dump did not appear overnight, and it will not disappear by ignoring it. What the imagesbi provided shows is the habit that has grown because no one felt responsible. But with these simple agreements, regular monitoring, and community cooperation, I believe that this problem can be reduced. It may not be perfect, but it is better than allowing the situation to continue as it is.

Hi @mhizta ! Sorry, I have to use your comment space to vent, because your topic and explanation are very interesting for this challenge. A conscience and good habits are valuable assets and are not acquired through college. Bad character traits are born from ethical failures and a crisis of conscience. This means that ethics and conscience are more valuable than advanced technology.

Throwing trash in the wrong place is selfish and stupid because the perpetrator only gets rid of used objects or the physical objects that cause odor and clutter, rather than avoiding the consequences. Second, the perpetrator unconsciously makes themselves an outsider in their environment, thus lacking a sense of belonging.

It's rare to find someone willing to remove a stone from the road, assuming there will be no consequences for themselves. But it's not uncommon to find someone who trudges through the night to throw trash in the wrong place.

I just commented on this part. I hope your contest challenge is successful.. my friend.

You just burst my brain. It's been long I heard just a nice compliment on my post. Talking about the waste, sometime I noticed that most of the people who are fond of doing this are traders who sells along the road and those who picks iron condemn. I don't want to mention name so that it would not be like am accusing some set it people.

Hi @mhizta, welcome to thinking and ideas week 2

My Observations:

You have written well with clear points. Waste cnd be controlled but I don't know how well it can work in Nigeria because in this country, it is hard for people to adhere to rules. Even when it is clearly written, people will always show who they are.

If only it could work, we ll would enjoy it.
