Steem4nigeria Acceleration contest week123: I have a dream
I want to make my mama proud.
I want to be a lawyer.
I want a satisfying life.
I want this, I want that.
Everyone has dreams—things we hope to achieve in the future. Sometimes we change. Sometimes life changes our dreams. And sometimes, even when we feel lost, it is still worth trying.
Back in school, our teacher would ask, “What do you want to be in the future?”
The classroom would be noisy—lawyer, banker, business owner, entrepreneur.
We all shouted big professions, not knowing how difficult the journey really was.
I had dreams too.
But right now, I don’t even know where I’m heading. I’m confused.
And I know I’m not the only one.
So let me break down my dreams—and what is standing in my way.
My Personal Dreams
Growing up, I had two strong dreams.
The first was to become a Bethelite—a voluntary work of serving our Creator. This was something I truly wanted. I dreamed about it, prayed about it, and made plans toward it. I gave it my best. But unfortunately, I don’t know how possible it still is.
My second dream—and the reason my first dream became difficult—is supporting my family.
I have always dreamed of taking care of my parents. Spending time with them. Flexing with them. Creating memories. My dad didn’t get the chance to fully enjoy family bonding with his own father, and I want to change that story.
I want my parents to feel the strength, joy, and happiness that come from family love.
I imagine one faithful day calling them and saying:
“Mum, Dad, you have done so much for us. It’s time to return the love and care. You worked morning and night to put food on our table. Now relax. Rest. We’ve got you. Bills on me.”
Why This Matters to Me
At the age of 18, I left home for a city I had never known before, searching for greener pastures. I stayed in constant communication with my family, especially my parents.
I didn’t think twice before leaving because I didn’t want to be a burden.
I believed I could take care of myself—and still help them.
But every year, I see it clearly: my parents are growing older.
Just last week, my dad posted a picture on Facebook. I stared at it for a long time. I commented jokingly, “My dad is getting old and I never flexed him.” But inside, it broke me.
They deserved the best long before old age. And I want to give them something unforgettable.
After many years away, I have decided to surprise them with a visit.
Oh my home, my home… when shall I see my beautiful home?
Uyo touchdown soon.
The Challenge
It’s not laziness. It’s not lack of effort.
I came to Lagos with hope, without thinking twice.
There’s a popular saying: “Money dey Lagos.”
No doubt—Lagos is full of opportunities. People move in and out every day.
But the truth is also clear: the cost of living is high.
Food prices increase. Transportation increases. Everything increases—except salary.
Being alone here means I pay for everything: rent, food, water, clothes, daily needs. Some months, I still send money home.
It is not easy.
My Plan
I refuse to give up.
One of my plans is to learn a handwork—a skill. I plan to visit home this year, return, learn a skill, and build from there.
Life doesn’t care how long it takes—as long as you don’t stop.
I will make it.
I will retire my parents.
I will give them financial freedom.
All I want is a satisfying life with my family—
Lovely moments, family pictures, recreating memories with extended family and loved ones.
Conclusion
My dream is simple.
A satisfying life with my family.
Moments of laughter.
Family pictures.
Memories that will outlive me.
I may be confused today, but I am not defeated. I may not have everything figured out, but I have not stopped trying.
This is my dream.
And it shall surely come to pass.
I would like to invite @paholags,@sahzh, @ridwant to participate in this contest.
