Before participating in the challenge titled “https://steemit.com/steem4nigeria/@ninapenda/slc-s29-w3-thinking-and-ideas-or-seeing-problems-differently,” I invited @candra8692, @ridwant, and @vivigibelis to join this very interesting challenge.

Identify one everyday problem in your community or country and explain some steps in solving them.

In this case, I am trying to address the issue of waste, which is a very complex problem. Currently, waste is not only a problem in urban areas, but has also become a problem in rural areas. For this reason, there are several things that can be done to solve the waste problem.

  • Waste reduction must begin at the source of the waste itself.

This relates to the pattern of use of materials or goods that become waste. This is indeed a serious problem related to the amount of consumption that produces waste. It requires awareness for the community to reduce materials that produce waste, of course by reducing spending or using materials that can add to waste. This is closely related to the lifestyle of the community, which indeed needs our collective concern.

  • Separation of household waste

In this case, it certainly starts from households, where there must be growing awareness or knowledge among the community in separating and sorting waste. There must be a separation between organic and non-organic waste. When waste is separated, it will make it easier for waste managers to organize appropriate locations. Organic waste can be directly processed into compost or at least planted immediately, as it decomposes more quickly.

Non-organic waste can be processed further, which generally benefits the community's economic development. This is a very important issue that must be addressed in order to solve the waste problem.

  • Recycling patterns must be implemented

This is a process that can be carried out by utilizing non-organic waste to become goods or raw materials. This can produce a product that can be resold. At the very least, there is a process that can be carried out to produce a product that can improve the economy of the community or group that is capable of managing waste to become goods with economic value.

  • Using waste as a source of energy

This is closely related to waste that can be used to generate energy for human welfare. Both waste processing as a source of electrical energy and other forms of energy are fundamentally very important parts of the solution to waste, which is a major problem in developing countries.

Why do you think this problem still exists despite many people noticing it?

This problem occurs because the level of management and legal action does not pay enough attention to this issue. At the very least, there needs to be action that makes violators feel deterred. Another thing that needs to be developed is public awareness of the importance of paying attention to what is called waste. As well as the consequences of using items that produce waste that is difficult to decompose and the long-term effects on future generations.

In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood part of this problem?

The problem is a lack of understanding about the separation of organic and non-organic waste and how to handle it. There is also a lack of public awareness about waste reduction, especially for non-biodegradable waste. Its use is currently increasing, and even in the city where I live, this has become a very complex problem. We can see the level of use of non-biodegradable items, even though people understand the consequences of doing so. At the very least, this requires a high level of awareness.

If you could change one mindset related to this issue, what would it be?

When talking about the level of awareness of using items that produce a lot of waste, as an educator, I will start by providing some insight into waste reduction, which can begin at the school I currently lead. Next, I will try to do the same with the parents of students who attend the school I lead. I will also do this with the community where I live, as I am one of the community leaders. This, of course, requires socialization about the importance of community awareness to reduce waste in households.

Thank you to all my Steemit friends who have stopped by my post. Greetings @muzack1
