Integrity
Seeing this contest, I knew I had to participate. Thanks for bringing this one up!
A month and a week ago, a friend of mine and I headed to portharcourt to get a vehicle for someone, we’d been contracted to Purchase and all of that went smoothly. We headed back to base with a mental knowledge of what we needed to fix to get the car in the best shape for the owner, but alas, what we saw as the issues become the least of our worries as the car began developing new faults as we fixed the old ones. We honestly didn’t budget for these and worse still, time was running. We had asked the owner for a two weeks window to get the car across to him, this was the second week and the car didnt look like something that was willing to go.
From buying new gear box, to literally replace the engine, and many other things, we saw shege, but through it all, I learnt something very valuable, my boss decided to be very honest and transparent with the customer.
He would tell the customer exactly what he was doing, where we were, what we were fixing, what other issues we encountered, etc. I often wondered if the customer would trust us with another buy seeing how long we were keeping this one. Even issues that we could have left off and whisked to the owner to fix by himself, my boss would ask it be fixed, at his own expense, and if he saw me frown or worried about the monetary expense, he would tell me and i quote
what is worth doing is worth doing well. My integrity matters more to me than saving a few Pennies. He trusted me to buy a good car for him, I won’t disappoint or let him down”
Even as I write, these words come afresh, reminding me that there are still good people with integrity intact in today’s wonder working world, I believe that’s how trust is built.
Being true to oneself means abiding by the personal principles that you’ve chosen to dictate your life. Not being swayed by other people’s opinions to the point where you do things contrary to your moral standards.
Trust: keeping to one’s promises is the fastest way to build trust between two people or a group of persons. It tells people faster than any words can say that you can and will keep to bargains and deadlines.
Integrity : Anyone who keeps to their promises is seen as a man or woman of integrity and in today’s world, integrity is a very scarce and rare commodity that opens doors faster than skills.
Honesty is about saying the truth. Regardless of the situation or circumstances, you say what is sincere, real and accurate.
While niceness on the other hand is being pleasant. Saying or doing things in such a way that the feelings of others are brought into consideration so not to hurt or make them discomfited.
A person can be honest but not say things in a nice way, and can also be nice and due to their desire not to hurt, they don’t say the truth or either soften it.
I wouldn’t and this is one of the first things I state clearly and continuously once I start becoming friends with a person. It is against my personal beliefs and moral standards, so they know upfront that I’m not the person they should seek out if they need a cover up lie.
