Is honesty costly?? Are there scenarios where one should be dishonest even if it means to save a life??
Chancing upon this contest, I remembered what happened recently, walk with me.

My colleagues and I always have a beginning of the year getaway. Here we plan and strategize for the new year. Plans, goals, weaknesses and failures of the past year and how to move better in the new year.
As we’ve done in previous years, we all lodge at a designated place so a person or group of persons are asked to go enquirer and make booking accommodations. Fast foward, the meeting goes well but a few days to the end of our stay, stories begin to circulate about the actual price of the lodging and then more stories begin to go round about an exhorbitant fee that was added to each person’s lodge payment.

This raises eye brows, suspicions and a lot of questions.
Now we need answers coupled with the fact that people do not trust the person or group of persons again. This is a typical situation where I feel that complete honesty would have solved from the get go, no matter what is involved because at this point, whatever explanation is given to us would be accepted with a pinch of salt - if I got the phrase right.

Do you agree that being honest is costly? Has it ever caused some e.g pain or regret?

Being honest has and will always be costly, but the true question is what will it cost you??

• Your integrity in the sight of people.
• People’s ability to trust your word.

These things are the major factors that make a responsible man and no matter how painful it may be or the level of regret a person faces, he or she should always be on the side of honesty.

Can you be honest without hurting people's feelings?

The answer to this is a resounding Yes. It all depends on the approach used in speaking to the person. For someone who has an offensive mouth odour, for instance, if the person is your friend , you can buy them a new brand of toothpaste and hard brush. This will definitely steer the conversation towards mouth hygiene and products that help one prevent smelly mouth due to bacteria and all. The message is passed in all honesty but in a kinder way.
This approach will make the person listen to you and take correction if and when need be.

Have you ever told a lie to protect someone?

As a child I have told lies to protect my siblings whenever we are caught by my parents for doing things they warned us not to do, but as I grew older, I realized that actions have consequences, before a person takes an action they should have weighed the resultant effect of that action. This has helped me stay away from situations that may warrant me to lie.

Is it okay to keep a secret if it could hurt someone?

Nothing on earth is going to be a secret forever. It may be a secret now, but it will finally be exposed. I think two factors need to be taken into consideration here;

• Is the person mature enough to handle the secret??Factors like age, mental stability, how close you are to the person, the person’s psyche- how the person interprets and responds to situations etc come to play

Keeping a secret no matter how hurting from anyone will still hurt them in the end when they get to find out. It may be more bearable if the factors i spoke about were the reasons they weren’t told initially, but as far as secrets go, hurt is inevitable. If the secret doesn’t have futuristic consequences, they can be left unspoken.
