This week in Movie Highlights - "Old is Gold" contest, I will review one of the all-time best classic movies. Its name is The Godfather, which was released in 1972. The entire film is adapted from a novel. It is a movie based on Mario Puzo's novel. Many people call it a masterpiece. The director of the film was Francis Ford Coppola. In The Godfather, the main character Vito Corleone was played by Marlon Brando and the character of Michael Corleone was played by Al Pacino. It is a gangster drama movie. And it highlights power, betrayal, and family bonds.
Story Overview (Spoiler Free)
The story of the film is set in 1940s New York, showing a mafia family. A powerful Italian-American Corleone family. Vito Corleone is the father of that Corleone family and he is a Don. He runs the business with respect and prudence. The youngest son of that family, Michael, first returns from the war and does not want to get involved in his family's business. But later an attack happens, which changes his situation. As a result, Michael is forced to take responsibility for the family later.
How the greed for power completely changes a person. We know that greed leads to sin, and sin leads to death. The film beautifully portrays that. Although it is an action movie, more focus has been given to the depth of its dialogues and character development. Family loyalty is so complex – this movie is one of the best examples of that.
Why is it "Old is Gold"?
The Godfather (1972) is truly "gold" because every element of this movie is timeless:
Acting: Marlon Brando played the main character Vito Corleone in this film. And Al Pacino's performance as Michael was one of the best in the movie. Marlon Brando won an Oscar with his extraordinary presence. Besides, the performances of the other characters were also very good.
Direction and Script: Coppola's direction was extraordinary in one word. The dialogues will live forever among the audience. And these dialogues are still widely used in pop culture today.
Theme: The dark side of the American Dream, family bonds vs the world of crime. These things show how it consumes the human soul.
Technical Aspect: The iconic theme music gives goosebumps just hearing it. Dark cinematography, from the wedding scene to the baptism scene – every sequence is absolutely perfect.
Impact: Top-rated movie on IMDb. Winner of three Oscars including Best Picture.
My Personal Experience
I first watched this movie on TV with my father. I was in school at that time. I was stunned watching the ending scenes. After that, I have watched it several times and every time I have found something new in this movie. In the midst of modern action movies of this era, this kind of depth is rarely seen. It truly represents the golden age of cinema.
Have you watched The Godfather movie? If you haven't watched it, you should watch it at least once.
