In the Midst of Disappointment

What do you understand by Disappointment?

In life, I see disappointment as a means of breakthrough because when one door closes, another opens. It might not be easy at that time, but looking inwardly, you would see the reason behind that disappointment.

I am not saying disappointment is good, no. All I'm saying is disappointment most times could be a blessing in disguise.

Disappointment could be heartbreaking at a time, but with time you get over it because it is a feeling that can't last except you choose to dwell in it. Feelings fade off and once your hope come alive again, you move on to the next feeling.

It is a normal human feeling which everyone feels at some point in life but how you choose to handle yours determines your strength or growth.

Have your ever been disappointed before? What caused it?

Yes, I have but it was a long time ago when I was still in the university, I had some group of friends that share knowledge with me. After each lecture, we do some revision and study before leaving and also before exams we work hard together to make sure we all pass.

During one semester exams, we were all prepared for the exams and as we all entered the hall, we took our sitting position while we waited for the questions. Immediately I saw the questions, I knew I could answer 4 out of 5 questions but I reached out to my team to help me with the last question I couldn't answer and they kept mute like they were deaf. They ignored me till we rounded off the exams. I felt really disappointed on that day.

I wasn't able to walk with them after exams and it made me withdraw myself from them a little because we were all around each other to help out but I don't know what meeting they had against me.

Why is it so hard to deal with disappointment?

I would say it's because at that moment, that is our only hope or chance or option and when it comes with disappointment, it's heart breaking. You feel you can't get any option again and maybe you have lost so giving up becomes the option.

It's so hard because of the level of hope or trust built in that thing. At that moment of disappointment, you think of another way out but keep dwelling in that issue for so long, even for a life time. There are disappointments that are painful even to the bone, which can break your expectations and affect your self-esteem.

And because you were earlier disappointed, you let fear have grip over you that you can't try the other available options.

What can we do to make disappointments less painful?

Disappointments will never feel good, but making it less painful one will have to consider the pros and cons of anythings at all whether business, or contract, before bargaining so that when it doesn't turn out good, you don't feel disappointed.

Another thing is focusing on the lesson rather than the problem. This will help the victim focus on healing more. For example, when a business contract fails, don't see the disappointment, focus on the reason it failed and try to adjust for the next one.

Lastly, give it time. Allow the first one cool off while you regain yourself. After a while, you can try again, but be sure to be applying the right measures this time.
