A new mom presented an experience of giving birth to a child that didn't cry immediately after birth. The baby was jerking and refusing to cry after much massage and beating on his leg and messaging of his spinal cord before he managed to make a sound, not a normal cry. Since he was a baby just coming out of this world, the mom said maybe he is tired, and later he will pick up. The midwife managed to prepare glucose water to give the baby for strength, but still the baby couldn't cry.

Diagnosis:

After taking a close observation and a physical examination of a newborn baby, we confirmed that the baby is suffering from asphyxia, which is based on a combination of the baby's low APGAR score and delayed breathing. Supportive investigation may include blood tests, kidney function, and/or MRI to assess brain injury.
Furthermore, a baby refusing to cry, refusing to suck, jerking and making a sound instead of a normal cry, and having difficulty in breathing are all characteristics of asphyxia.

Causes

The main cause of asphyxia in this baby. The patient is experiencing labor or issues like cord compression or the cord around the baby's neck. The placenta is separating from the uterus before delivery.

Another reason may be genital anomalies or severe infection in the fetus. The lack of oxygen can decrease the baby's heart rate and flow to organs like the brain and kidneys. It can lead to cell damage and improper cell function. In severe cases, it can lead to long-term neurological damage, such as intellectual disability or cerebral palsy.

Symptoms of asphyxia

A newborn does not receive enough oxygen before or after birth, leading to a lack of chemical changes in the baby's body, such as low oxygen level (hypoxemia) or buildup of acid, which can lead to organ damage or even death if not treated promptly.

Diagnosis confirmation

Because of a newborn's refusal to cry after birth, the baby underwent a blood test and was recommended to be placed on oxygen to receive enough oxygen to thrive. While undergoing the recommended oxygen, the child did not have enough strength to assist the baby to thrive; the child died.

But when the mom was interviewed, She said she didn't register for antenatal in the clinic to help her learn what she needs to know about pregnancy, childbirth, and antenatal care, as the experience she had during this loss was an eye-opener for her, and she advised expectant mothers to seek the necessary medical steps.

Conclusion

What a pregnant woman needs to do to avoid asphyxia is to register for antenatal intensive care so that she will be taken care of properly.
