SLC31-W3: Shop & Share Challenge - Street Market Purchase
I am starting by wishing all my Steemit friends good health. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah, I am very well. Today I will participate in the awesome IT Engagement Challenge and through this engagement I will share with you about the vegetable market in our region. So let's get started.
✓ Tell us why you chose that street or open market
Joydevpur is an important place for Gazipur district and here people from different places around come to buy and sell raw fresh vegetable market. This open market is held every day on the west side of Joydevpur Railway Station. There are different types of vegetable shops here and every day buyers come according to their needs. There is a shop I know along the road on the north side of Joydevpur Market and I buy my required vegetables from this shop. The name of this shop is Javed Vegetable Shop. Although the shop does not have a nameplate, the shop has been here for a long time and currently the shop is doing well.
When you come to Joydevpur market, you will see that there are different types of fresh vegetables here. For example, this shop has chichinga, fenugreek, brinjal, capsicum, lettuce leaves, bitter gourd and many more vegetables. Joydevpur is a populated area and it is a city. So people from different surrounding areas also come here to shop and there is a crowd of customers here every day.
Compared to other areas, the prices of vegetables in this market are comparatively lower and almost all types of vegetables are available here, so customers can easily buy from here. You can reach this market by walking for five minutes from Joydevpur railway station. Also, there is no CCTV camera in this shop and the money for the purchased vegetables has to be paid in cash. All the vegetables are arranged in front of this shop and the customers stand and buy the vegetables according to their choice, so there is no proper seating arrangement for the customers here.
✓ Price of the item purchased from the street or open market
Most of the items in the street or open markets are fresh and the price is also relatively low. Because the shopkeepers in the open market always try to purchase vegetables from local farmers, but sometimes they also purchase vegetables from the wholesale market. Moreover, the vegetables in the street or open market are also hard to see. For your convenience, the prices of some items in the street or open market are mentioned below.
| Name | BD Price | Steam Price |
|---|---|---|
| Capsicum per piece | 30 | 4.2 |
| Brinjal per kg | 40 | 5.6 |
| Cucumber per kg | 30 | 4.2 |
| Papaya per kg | 30 | 4.2 |
| Chichinga per kg | 60 | 8.4 |
| Carrot per kg | 40 | 5.6 |
| Green chilli half kg | 60 | 8.4 |

✓ Describe your shopping experience including price, bargaining and product quality
First of all, street or open market products are not one-rate, i.e. you can bargain with the seller for the price. I like this very much because whenever I go to buy vegetables from the open market, I choose fresh vegetables and bargain with the seller. Sometimes the seller wants to sell the product at a higher price than necessary, so the buyers buy vegetables at a higher price. However, some vegetables have fixed prices that cannot be reduced. However, in some cases, if you buy more vegetables, the seller sometimes keeps less than the total price.

When I bought green chili, the seller said the price of 250 grams of green chili was 30 taka, that is, half a kg of green chili costs 60 taka, but when I bought it in half a kg and asked the seller to keep it 10 taka less, he kept the price of half a kg of green chili at 60 taka. I bought the vegetables by saving money in this way.
✓ In some places, there is usually traffic jam in the road or open market, describe how busy the road or open market is
This is a great question for me because as I said earlier Joydevpur is a populated area and there are a lot of vehicles in Joydevpur especially there is a railway crossing here. Apart from that, there are various open markets on the side of the road due to which traffic jams are created every day and pedestrians suffer. Especially from afternoon to ten o'clock in the night, there is a lot of traffic jam in Joydevpur which I have witnessed myself. Because of my own need, whenever I have gone to market in Joydevpur, I have seen that there is always traffic jam for this open market.
So every evening, the traffic police or the general police try to break up the open market and the traffic jam reduces. Still, the vendors of the open market sit on the side of the road every day and sell vegetables to the buyers. Since the buyers get fresh vegetables from the open markets at a low price, the buyers always flock to the open market.
✓ What is your advice to street or open market vendors to improve their business?
First of all, I would say that open market vendors should sell formalin-free fresh vegetables and purchase fresh vegetables from local farmers in nearby villages so that they can buy them at a much lower price and buyers can also buy from the vegetable vendor at a lower price. In that case, open market vendors are making a profit and buyers are satisfied with getting good quality vegetables at a lower price. This will increase the sales of traders.
Since urban areas are densely populated, it is better to do business with a small space on the roadside so that pedestrians do not suffer and traffic jams are not created.

Review/Grading
Review:
You have visited a street business at your place and explored the shop of a seller, that sales vegetables, and fruit items that are sold in the street. Having such a place in your area eases the stress of people around going far to buy what they want. Having a big or small space depends on the choice and what is to be sold in the shop.
