I’m delighted to participate in a movie diaries called “SC-S33/W6-Movie Diaries challenge| Movie that changed my perspective” about relationships, people, success, & everything about life hosted by @ruthjoe. There exists many movie out there, Among them I choose a Oscar winning Hollywood movie called 12 Years a Slave.

It’s an autobiographical movie upon a book written by Solomon Northup himself. I think, this is a great opportunity to write something about this extraordinary masterpiece. First time I saw this movie during my student life in university. Then I watched this movie several times. Last time I saw this movie with my wife maybe couple of weeks ago.

Watching 12 Years a Slave changed the way I look at life. Before watching the movie, I thought I understood suffering, freedom, relationships, and success in a fairly simple way. After watching it, I started to think differently about people, relationships, freedom, success, and even about my own life. Some movies entertain us for a few hours, but this one stayed in my mind long after it ended.

But the story made me realize that there are many things in life that we take for granted simply because we have never had to live without them. Freedom, family, dignity, safety, and even the ability to make our own choices can feel ordinary when we have them every day. The movie made me stop and think about how valuable these things really are.

The first thing that changed for me was how I see freedom. Before watching the movie, I never thought deeply about what freedom really means because I have always had it in my normal life. I can go where I want, talk to people, work, make my own decisions, and stay with my family.

These things seem very normal to me. But the movie showed me how painful life can become when all these simple rights are taken away. Solomon Northup had a family, a home, a job, and a normal life. Then, in a very short time, he lost almost everything.

What affected me most was the way the movie showed human relationships. Some people who seemed kind were not always trustworthy, while others showed kindness when they had very little power themselves. It made me understand that we should not judge people only by their position, money, or appearance. A person's real character is often seen in how they treat someone who cannot give them anything in return. The movie also showed how easily relationships can be destroyed when fear, greed, and power become more important than humanity.

It also changed my idea of success. I used to think of success mainly in terms of achieving goals, having a good career, earning money, and living comfortably. After watching this movie, I started to see success in a different way. Having a good life is not only about what we achieve or own. Being able to live with dignity, stay close to the people we love, remain true to ourselves, and have the freedom to make our own decisions are also forms of success. Without these things, material success can feel meaningless.

The movie also made me think about how quickly life can change. Solomon Northup had a family, a home, a career, and a normal life, and then suddenly everything was taken away from him. His experience reminded me that life should never be taken for granted. We often become frustrated about small problems without realizing how much we already have.

Most importantly, 12 Years a Slave made me more conscious of the value of being human. It taught me to appreciate freedom, respect others, and never judge someone's life without understanding their circumstances.

I finished the movie with a feeling that was difficult to explain. It was not just sadness or anger. It was a deeper realization that life is fragile, people can change, and the things we consider ordinary may actually be the most valuable things we have. It changed the way I see people, relationships, success, freedom, and life.
