Cactus flowers disappear so fast

Cactus flowers live for only one day, which is something a few people know. I doubt you knew this and you wouldn't unless you live around them or someone made you aware like I am doing right now.

We already know that those plants also grow in conditions that are very harsh.

Water is important but in the desert it's scarce aand that is why the plant finds it difficult to access and use it well. Trying to make the flower bloom takes most of that scarce water. So they don't bloom for long, the flower will open up and attract a pollinator to do its work before closing up.

There are plants that bloom during the night too. It is when the bats and moths are more active at cool times. The blooming also happens at a time there is no competition for water. This means that when morning comes and you just woke up, the flower has already withered off.

One type of cactus grows in rainforests that get a lot of rain. It is a Christmas cactus that keeps its flowers for many days because of plenty water. So, there was no need for it to do it that way since water was not the problem. The rules were different for it. In the desert conditions, we know the rules are harsh. So they need to tlower quickly, get pollinated, close up and stay alive.

We see so many flowers as soft and beautiful, but the cactuses are much different. The way cactus flowers open is just a serious and very careful work. Like I said, time is very important, there is really no time for delays or feelings. The flower should be there for only the time it needs.

Your chance to see them is less, if not, the chance is gone or you'll need to spot another one but not the same one. This carefulness is not common for a lot of living things. Most plants and animals and us people, waste far more things than we need. But we know there's a time when resource is scarce and we naturally go into management mode, the cactus lives in that mode throughout its lifetime.
