How many flowers can a single tulip plant bear?

How many flowers does a tulip plant produce? It seems simple enough at first glance, one bulb gives one flower, the way we think of tulips is as a single perfect flower on a green stalk. But gardening proves to us that things are not always that simple.

When I was young, I planted my first bag of Apeldoorn bulbs. I was so proud of how I had made neat holes for the bulbs in my garden. The next spring, the tulip sent up not one, but three strong stalks from the same bulb, each topped with a flower bud. At first I thought that I had probably planted multiple bulbs together by mistake, so I searched my planting diagram, which was a wet piece of notebook paper, the brown papers we used to use before the white one with blue lines, and found I was wrong. I had successfully planted one bulb and it was showing its beauty, having three strong stalks just like the one in the shot I've shared.

Typically Tulips produce one flower for every bulb planted. But if the bulb has the right conditions, happy bulb, well fed with the right nutrients, it might create a double or multiple stems. The terms multi headed describes these multiple flowers.

My mother grew a patch of red tulips in her old garden. Sometimes, they produced many flowers, other times there was one single flower. She always said it was dependent on rainfall or soil becoming depleted. She could have very likely been correct. I cannot give you an accurate answer here because I'm still confused about exactly the right factors that guarantees multiple.
