Lavender and snakes
I was passing by the street and saw some lavender and there's a whole idea about lavender and snakes I would like to talk about. I didn't see a snake though, thank God for that because I'm very scared of them.
Some people do believe lavender repels snakes, I am not convinced that this is accurate. I'm not even sure if it is or isn't. My reasoning behind this is simply the fact that snakes have a different way of smelling than we people do.
The scent produced by a lavender plant is remarkably strong, and some casually believe that snakes are repelled by strong smelling scents. Some will plant lavender plants in their yards and beside the home in an attempt to deter snakes. Snakes use their tongues to collect scent particles from the air that's around them, and what smells bad to a human being may not bother a snake in the least.
I believe the more accurate answer to this is actually somewhat different from what most people think might be the real case here. Snakes tend to stay in the areas where they find food and shelter so that means if you have a lavender bush that is thick and dense, a snake could be using it for shelter. This is not because of a snake's fondness or attraction to lavender, but rather simply due to it being a good shelter option. Snakes are also known to follow rodents, so if the lavender plant provides cover for rodents, snakes might follow them there as well.

Lavender does not attract snakes because they are not attracted to the color of the flower or its scent, nor does lavender repel snakes in any reliable manner, and I personally think that the idea of lavender as a snake repellent is a bit exaggerated.
The more important determining factor is whether or not you have tall grasses, lumber piles or where small animal dens are located. It is those things that are likely to draw snakes into your yard rather than the presence of lavender. Yes, lavender does produce a certain appeal as a flower and as a pleasant scented plant, but the snakes don't care.
