Pick and Write [Agricultural Word]👉#01

So what's really the best type of soil to use?

I've thought about this question before and the debate with a friend of mine didn't end in a one soil name. I believe the best type of soil for you to grow in will depend largely on what you plan on growing.

I'll bring up the three types of soil I usually see farmers in my region use, that's loamy soil, the clay soil and the sandy soil.

In general though, some farmers will say that loam is the type of soil that is best for growing things. Loam is the perfect mixture of sand, silt, and clay, it gives you the perfect balance of weight, it's not too heavy or too light and holds moisture without drowning root systems and drains well enough that you don’t get a mess after heavy rainfall.

The clay soil will needs some work, time and effort, it will work well for some crops. There are lots of nutrients in clay soil, but the downside of clay soil if you've used it for crops before you will know, it dries out hard, becomes sticky when it is wet and root crops don’t do well when grown in pure clay as opposed to maize, which seems to grow well in clay.

Sandy soil also has a similar problem, when you add organic matter like manure or anything else that will hold moisture and nutrients, water runs through the sandy soil too easily and it becomes difficult to keep up with the drainage.

Some farmers are not able to select the type of soil they get to work with, let's say when you inherit or buy your land, most likely you’ll just have the kind of soil that was on the land you bought. So instead of thinking about the best soil, perhaps you should think about what type of soil you have and how to work with it.

The pH is a factor to consider when planting some kinds of crops. Some crops prefer to be grown in lower pH and others grow well in higher pH soil but, to tell the truth, I don't know many small scale farmers who test the pH of their soils regularly. Most of them grow crops based on their personal observations and personal experience with the soil.
