Sunflowers growing in Fibonacci spiral patterns

I sat for a long time looking at some sunflower photography, it was just on my laptop I was trying to remember where I took them but I've taken some sunflower seeds pictures before, but I don't remember when, I was not looking at it for any particular reason.

I realized something I had to fact check. If you look in the centre there are seeds in a spiral going both directions, clockwise and counter clockwise at the same time. And the amount of spirals in both directions always coincide with Fibonacci numbers. Like 34 spirals one way and 55 spirals the other or 55 spirals one way and 89 spirals the other way. I know those who didn't take Fibonacci subtopic in math seriously may not really understand this too well.

What is amazing is that the plant doesn't have any idea about this pattern. The plant doesn't tell itself how to form a mathematical pattern, it just makes each individual seed to grow out at a certain angle from the previous seed and it appears by itself. This angle is always 137.5 degrees, and if all the seeds in the plant form at this angle and continue doing so over time, the entire sunflower will grow with this mathematics.

The angle of 137.5 degrees is what is referred to as the golden ratio, this also goes back to Fibonacci, so everything comes full circle.

I've got other things I should be getting done right now but I have never combined maths and flowers before so this is getting interesting.

I'm sitting here studying this photo of the sunflower and thinking about how the sunflower itself had no intention of growing to look this way, nor did it optimise its growth pattern but simply grew each seed at the proper angle and as such formed a perfect pattern. Thousands of individual seeds, no waste of space and all independent of one another growing according to a common rule. Probably the instructions from the flower's DNA.
