Food has really changed with modern farming

A new way of farming came about a century ago. Food was just food before.

Each product was unique to its region, and true farming was involved. Farmers used different methods to let the soil do well and fertilized crops naturally using livestock manure. True farming and soil stewardship was the default and farmers weren’t charging a premium for it.

I think it's Industrial farming that changed everything. Quick, cheap and large food production was the goal using synthetic methods. They started using toxic pesticides to grow everything as fast as possible with engineered, cheap production.

All of these feed the world methods come with serious drawbacks. The toxic chemicals that were used to grow food faster and cheaper stayed on those plants, left a residual toxicity and people ate them. This is really what created a trending belief that eating clean food should cost a premium.

That's our new system of food. The baseline is toxic and repackaged as a luxury product. True, unchanged, normal food is now sold at a higher price.

People who cannot afford the organic label eat what is available, eat what is cheap and eat food that is both cheap and toxic. The label should really be modern agriculture and the farming that put chemical farming of the soil. True nutrient deficiency and quick harvest methods. We are left with food that keeps you alive and doing almost nothing for you. The industry is left with empty promises.

The issue isn't about science or being cautious, it's about what happened when profit was the only determining factor. Things like soil health, long term safety, real nutrition, none of this is captured clearly in a quarterly report, so it was deprioritized or removed altogether.

The food system wasn't upgraded but rather corrupted. And we've normalized this so completely that, in the face of a food system that gives us nutrition, buying food seems like a lifestyle choice, rather than a right and that's where we stand.
