Pick and Write [Agricultural Word]👉#15
For this week's pick and write contest I'm picking "Rural Development"
Food does not just appear at our local grocery stores on their own. The unfortunate thing is most of us don't really have an understanding of the process of food production and distribution. Most would think of farming as a very straightforward process, planting seeds and having water around so the seeds can magically grow into crops we eat. The danger of not taking the process seriously is that if crops do not grow, people will not eat and they'll die.
Where does Rural development come in?
Without the development of infrastructure, trying to produce food would be an activity that will either end up as waste or give you way less crops than you imagined you would have. It is not simple at all and it involves construction of new and improved roads, power lines and other forms of water supply systems. It is the most important infrastructure that most of us living in a country may overlook. The farmers see the direct connection between crops and infrastructure.
Just think about it, without the roads, people do not have access to food markets and that means potentially waste food before they sell it. There are less processing and storage units and the community pays the price. Without insulation and access to water storage, the community is dependent solely on the weather.
People must have access to withdrawing money not just to buy the products of a farm, but also to use it to finance the farm and to buy seeds and equipment. If people do not have access which is infrastructures, they are not able to have income and the produce is of the most limited quality.
Schools are also very important because most of the education we will get with regards to crop production will be taught in schools. The schools are buildings with teachers and classrooms. Without these infrastructure, it's going to have to be who you know. Unless your parents or family member is already into farming, it'll be difficult to learn the practical things about it.
When young people in the village have no access to educational institutions in that village, they are forced to the city in search of opportunities. The community does not lose the land, but people lose the most valuable part of farming, educated people. This is the rural community and the most needed part of the food production and supply.
Investing in infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, is a choice people with the money need to make. You can choose to ignore but there are consequences when governments choose to forgo this option, and those consequences are easily predicted, guaranteed you'll get an increase in food prices, deepening of poverty in the areas that are already the most impoverished and the burdening of cities that weren't designed to endure additional population pressure.
The development theories are irrelevant. You either choose to construct the appropriate roads and other necessary infrastructures like your health clinics and power connections as well as give rural farmers enough financial resources. Failure to do so, will expose the fragility of your food systems. You can't play with that at all in a nation.
Thanks for reading, I invite my dear friends to join the contest @fuli @ruthjoe @peacemike
