Why Ghana still imports tomatoes

in Steem-Agro2 days ago

We have no justification for Ghana's inability to grow its own tomatoes enough for the whole country to depend on and to export in their numbers. People in the desert are doing very serious farming. If despite all of these resources Ghana is still unable to produce enough tomatoes to feed its people the issue is leadership not farmers, land or climate.

It is not about expanding the amount of land under cultivation, rather it is about developing the right variety and creating the conditions to maximize output. We have been importing tomatoes from Burkina Faso to supplement local production, if we don't put in place the proper mechanisms we are likely to face difficulties. I've been harvesting the last of my main crop tomatoes in the hopes that they will provide some delicious treats well for the other half of the year.

The only thing that has prevented me from growing beefsteak tomatoes is their flavor because I usually see them to be rather weird but I like how big they look. I've grown past growing the biggest tomatoes and would prefer to have more tomatoes that don't produce waste or leftovers the days I just want a sandwich. Really red tomatoes are perfect for the hot dry season, they are juicy and they feel heavy in my palm.

But a lesson well learned, please don't refrigerate fresh garden tomatoes because doing so ruins their flavor and texture. I had to try the difference and realized I've messed up for so long.
