INTRODUCTION

We can't think of having food to eat without planting. This is the reason planting is very necessary as we produce the food we eat through planting. In agriculture, planting forms the base upon which agricultural practices are carried out.

Seeds are the items used in Planting. It could be done by digging up the soil, puting the seeds or seedlings into the soil and covering the soil afterwards. Some materials would be added to the soil to enhance the growth of the seeds into plants. The choice of the type of growth enhancing materials depend on the farmer. This growth enhancement material may be organic, inorganic, or the combination of both.

When a farmer observes a good planting practices, it would result to good plants growth, achieving a healthy crops, and good farm produce for harvesting.

Farmers do not just go into planting for planting sake. They have different reasons why they choose to go into planting. These reasons may be:

• To make money from farming
• To produce food and
• To produce raw materials for industries

How to start Planting

To start planting, there has to be good arrangements made in terms of preparation. The land must be available or acquired for planting. It then follows by clearing, burning if necessary, get it ploughed and harrowed in order to have a suitable seedbed. This would be followed by sorting for good quality, healthy and seeds that are viable for planting along side other needed planting materials

Some steps to take when going into planting include the following:

• Clear the land Make sure that the land of free from weeds and any other thing that may hinder the progress of planting. The soil must be good enough for the planting.

• Make good choice of Planting Materials
  Carefully select quality and healthy seeds or seedlings for planting.

• Decide when to be doing your planting
  Nature has provided us with the appropriate seasons to do our planting. Most planting are done at the beginning of the rain season. This has always produced good Plant yields.

• Make sure plants are properly spaced between each other

• Planting crops proper Here you make sure to put your seeds or seedlings in the proper depth of the soil and cover the seed with soil.

• Guard against pests and weeds Ensure to continuously weed the farm so that the weeds would not compete against the plants.

• Ensure to provide water especially during the dry season.

Ways Planting could done

Below are some of the means by which planting could be done:

• Vegetative planting:
  In this method of plants some plants like tubers, suckers, or rhizomes are mostly used. Plants that are planted in this way include Cassava, plantain, yam, banana or sugarcane.

• By dibbling
  In using this method, the Seeds are planted one by one in their different holes, depths at a particular distances. For example, groundnut, maize, or beans are planted this way.

• By Transplanting:
  Here, Seeds would be first and foremost, nursed differently. As the seeds starts to grow at their very tender stage, they would now be transferred to the main farm for their complete growth. Pepper, rice, tomatoes and onions are planted this way.

• By seed broadcasting:
  This method of planting has to do with a random scattering of seeds on the surface of the soil.

• By seed Drilling :
  Using this method, Seeds would be placed in a manner that it goes along in rows .

Engaging in planting is not an easy task. It requires a lot of efforts to be put in for us to really appreciate the harvest.

When the procedures for proper planting are followed, coupled with supporting the plants with their needed nutrients gotten from the organic and inorganic materials, plants would grow well and give a good yield.
