My Flowering Bitter kola plant, why has it never bore fruits?
Happy New Year fellow agro steemians! I thank the Almighty God for sustaining our lives after experiencing so many challenges we went through last year. As we have successfully made it to this year 2026, I pray that God in his infinite mercies, would help us achieve numerous success this year to compensate for whatever we may have lost this year.
Beloved agro steemians, this is my first post of the year and it is my pleasure to share it here with you people here. I want to discuss an important issue that has been a challenge for me for quite a long time.
As farmers, it could be painfully disappointing to see your plants or crops not doing well.
The image above is a picture of my bitter kola plant that has not bear fruits for several years even after it buds flowers. The plant is well positioned in a good environment where it gets enough sunlight. The soil is humus and enriched with nutrients that it requires to do well. Alongside the rich nutrients iIt gets from my organic manures, it is positioned in an open environment where it gets enough rainfall to help it absorb the nutrients.
To my unexpected and great disappointment, this plant has not done well to bear the expected fruits ever since it is planted. I could recall the last time it bore its first few fruits of which since then, it has never bore any more fruits.
To many farmers like me, I know that this is an experience that they would never want to have. They would be disappointed with this situation just like I am. Seeing a plant that has been nurtured to the highest required level not able to yield the expected fruits, could force the farmer to cut the plant down.
It is said that the unbuded bitter kola seed when planted, takes a longer period of up to ten years before it begins to bear fruits. This my bitter kola plant is over ten years now and should be bearing fruits ceaselessly but this is not the case.
You can see the flowers I hold on my hands. It constantly bears flowers which indicates that it is about to make fruits. But at the end of bearing the flowers all around it, it can not bear fruits because the flowers will all fall off.
I practically decided to climb on the plant to you how matured the plant is, for it to be bearing fruits. If you take a closer look on this plant, you will the flowers it bore all around it.
To surprise you all, this plant bears flowers at least three to four times in a year. Yet all the flowers will fall of and can not make any fruit from them. Now from my observation, it is not that it lacks nutrients. The soil is fertile enough for it. It gets an adequate amount of rainfall it needs. It captures enough sunshine which is good to photosynthesize it.
With all of the above mentioned requirements been met, I now ask, why does this plant not able to still bear fruits? Cutting it down is not in my mind now.
Dear fellow agro steemians, what do you all think could be the cause of this plant not bearing fruits for over fifteen years of been planted?
What could be done to stop its constant shedding off, of its flowers?
If there's something different to be done, what could that be, to make it start bearing fruits?
I would appreciate to see your suggestions to profer solutions that could make the plant start bearing fruits.

MODs Comment/Recommendation:
There are many factors that contribute to this inadequacy. Most importantly, it is the Phosphorus/Potassium deficiency that you have to be intentional about. Also, there is the climatic stress within which this plant is situated. Water and pest stress are also contributing climatic factors. I hope your plant dies well. Be intentional about checking these few factors. Thanks for sharing with us.
