INTRODUCTION

Due to high cost of farming inputs such as the inorganic fertilizers, farmers are now resorting to the use of organic fertilizers to enhance their plants growth and crop yields. Nonetheless, the increasing rate of health challenges resulting from the consumption of food items which their plants are grown with chemical fertilizers, are making farmers to use the organic fertilizers to support the growth of their plants. This is so because, people are becoming conscious that some of the causes of their ill health comes from what they eat or drink, as well as the environment they live in.

Organic farmers have discovered that, using non synthetic fertilizers helps in soil conservation. Also, synthetic fertilizers are known to cause environmental pollution but, the use of non synthetic fertilizers would help to minimize the impact of the pollution from synthetic fertilizers.

Why I Use More Of organic fertilizers

Coming from what has been said so far about the organic and inorganic fertilizer, I am more sure that organic fertilizers are more better than the inorganic ones.

First for me, organic fertilizers are easy to obtain. You can easily get it by rearing animals like chicks, got, pigs and other domestic deris. If you can't rear the animals yourself, you can go to the animal farmers to source for them.

Secondly, They are the most affordable type of fertilizers that even a novice famer, could easily use without going through rigorous training. in the application of the inorganic fertilizers, one needs to go through one training or the other. The training may also come with some fees that would be paid by farmers.

Again, the fertility of the organic fertilizers lasts longer than the chemical fertilizers. When the organic fertilizers are used, the soil retains its fertility for a long time. For the chemical fertilizers, the case is not the same. The soil doesn't retain the fertility of chemical fertilizers for long. It only lasts within the planting season it is been applied.

The practice of organic farming

Organic could be easily learnt or practiced. It has to do with with the farmer knowing how to apply organic materials to improve soil fertility.

Farmers practice organic farming in the following ways:

  • By mulching
Farmers gather organic materials such as wasted plants or damaged plants, dry grasses, dry leaves to make the soil fertile. They also use to help the soil to retain moisture, control and minimize the rapid growth of weeds. All aimed at retaining soil fertility.

  • **By planting different types of crops on the piece of land. This is known as mixed cropping in farming.

  • By using organic wastes
This is done by gathering wastes from poultry chicks, goats, pigs, fish ponds, and the remains of dead animals and plants. Farmers all these in carrying out their organic farming.

  • By planting cover crops
Farmers plants various types of cover crops which acts as a shield against erosion that may wash away the soil nutrients and the soil itself.

Advantages of organic farming

The practice of organic farming comes with some gains. They are:

  • Safe food for human consumption
Foods produce from the use of organic farming are safer for consumption because they have no traces of the chemicals that are dangerous to human health.

  • It promotes the practice of healthy farming systems

  • There are good organisms that support the growth of plants when organic fertilizers are used

  • Since organic materials are not harmful to the environment, pollution of water and soil from chemical substances is minimized

  • The overall soil health is improved by the use of organic materials

Disadvantages of the organic farming

  • It requires intensive efforts to produce good yields

  • Plants responds to organic materials used as manure very slow. This also delays the growth of plants.

  • Controlling weeds and pest in organic farming is difficult.

  • It produces lower yields than that of the use of chemical substances.

Although both organic and inorganic farming have the good sides of them, I would prefer it more to be practicing organic farming.
