Rural Development
INTRODUCTION

Rural development is a term used in describing how the living standards of the people in the rural communities are improved generally. It hinges on the economic and level of the living standards of the rural community populace. When you visit a rural community, you would discover that they are often made up of few villages making different communities and as such, they constitute a low fraction of of the entire population.

The level of development in the rural area is often low, so they are ranked poor in all areas of development. They lack good roads, poor education and business environment. Their is also lack of quality healthcare, power supply and good drinkable water. Infact, it is evidently known that the rural people depend heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. They are in this sense, mono economic dependence.

Rural Development seeks to address the infrastructural deficit in the rural communities. The basic amenities highlighted above should be provided so as to improve the livelihood of the rural community people.

The lives of the rural people could be further improved through establishment of skill training centers, banking or financial services.

Agriculture is the mainstay economic activity of the rural populace. This therefore calls for the urgent provision of social amenities to improve their livelihoods and agricultural productivity. So rural development is important to agriculture as follows:

  • Rural development reduces rural-urban migration

Majority of the people in the rural areas are farmers. When they are encouraged by the provision of farming inputs to encourage their farming endeavors, the idea of thinking to look for jobs at the urban areas would be dashed.

  • Job Creation
When there is development in the rural areas, more jobs would be created in transporting, distribution, marketing, and also in processing of agricultural commodities.

  • Efficiency in crops and livestock production

Rural development makes production of farm produce easy for farmers. By it, farmers would engage in mass production crops and livestocks to boost food production in the country.

  • Use of the 21st century farming systems
By rural development, farmers would easily learn to make use of modern day farming machineries and systems.

  • Rural development boosts Food security
When there are developments in the rural areas, it would encourage farmers to increase their productivity which would be enhanced through good and functional storage systems.

Massive rural development is a tool that could be used to reduce poverty in the land because farmers would have access to amenities that could generate employment.
