What is Tilling

Tilling is a known agricultural practice that involves loosening, turning, or stirring the topsoil before crop cultivation. Tilling makes sure that the soil is ready and soft for the planting of crops. Tilling is also important for aeration, which aids roots in growing effectively without any complications.

Discuss the types of Soil Tilling

There are a lot of types of soil tilling, and they have their own benefits;

  • Primary tilling: this is the act of breaking the soil that has been closed together. This takes place before or after the harvesting period, and it is just like preparing the soil for new growth.

  • Secondary tilling: this is known to be a process of smoothing out the soil, preparing the seedbed, and removing weeds. This can also be referred to as final touches before planting.

  • Deep tilling: This is the kind of tilling that helps to improve drainage, and is mostly used in areas where the soil happens to be compacted.

  • Shallow tilling: This is not a big deal at all, it just requires you to scratch the soil surface to mix with amendments or remove weeds.

Soil tilling has its advantages and disadvantages, let's take a look at them;

Advantages

  1. Soil tilling is a process that helps to break the tight soil, improve water infiltration, and root growth

  2. Soil tilling is an act that helps to create an avenue for planting by smoothing the surface and helping the soil and seeds have a good connection.

  3. This can also be useful in the control of weeds in the farm, it is also effective in countering their growth cycle.

Disadvantages

  1. Soil tilling can be very good at causing soil erosion because the soil is becoming loosened, allowing the free flow of water and wind.

  2. When the soil is exposed due to tilling, organic matter that is present in the soil tends to get lost.

  3. This is an act that can render earthworms and microbes homeless.
