The last time I went to that noisy market in Nigeria, I experienced something I did not experience before. I remember I zeroed in on one of the stalls that had big baskets of sundried fish of assorted kinds. That stall used to purvey nothing much.
The smell alone was powerful enough to allow one to imagine the countless hours spent catching fish, the work of the fishermen on the open seas, and the daunting efforts of the traders went to bed, only to wake the next day to expertly prepared fish that had now been beautifully arranged in selling baskets. One could hear the inaudible sounds that formed the very foundation of substenace.
Other than the dried fish, I found another stall selling palm oil. Whereas the fish stall was vibrant and full of life, this one was quite the opposite. It had monotonic, deep and rich hues of palm oil.
This oil, the Nigeria cooking oil, was skilfully packed in a numerous containers, with some in the basin ready to be more easily filled, and other protective jackets ready for the squeeze, designed for the user’s palm. The rich, deep red plumage vomited out like lava was enough and said everything one needed to know of endless toil needed to bring, one of the most important staples in the history of mankind, from the fields to the farm. I feel we often forget the struggle and the hurdles taken for one single fruit to be attire into the table,.
My visit to the market had a two fold purposes. I purchased these dried fish knowing they would add new protein to meals I would be preparing. One of the more profound things I noticed was the agriculture was the facilitator of the endless livelihoods. Sells of dried fish or just scoops of palm oil are a means of sustenance for a family. Each purchase has the ability to massively motivate a large number of people working in the background. This system shows the true power of the agriculture and how it serves the people and the economy.
