Explain in detail the term Horticulture

Horticulture refers to the branch in agriculture that involves science, arts, technologies and business of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants. It is an English word that is formed by combining the Latin words hortus that means garden and cultura that means cultivation. Consequently, literal meaning of horticulture is the cultivation of plants that are present in the gardens.

Horticulture involves intensive crops that are grown, cultivated, developed and sold that are utilized as food, comfort and ornament. It targets the small scale plant rather than large field crops. Horticulture has its significant sub-branches. These are pomology, research and cultivation of fruit crops; olericulture, research and cultivation of vegetable crops; floriculture, cultivation and research of flowers and landscape plants and ornamental plants and landscape horticulture; this deals with preparations and upkeep of gardens, parks and green zones.

The horticulture activity also entails the plant propagation, plant breeding, and soil care, irrigation, pest and disease control, harvesting, storage and marketing of the horticultural crops. It is a combination of scientific and practical skills so as to enhance the quality and production of plants. The hi-techs in the current day horticulture entail hi-tech horticultural provision like green houses, irrigation systems and better portrayals of crops that have been subjected to high yield.

In addition to this, horticulture is also useful in the field of environmental enhancement and beautification. It plays a significant role in the sustainable agriculture as there are many horticultural crops that are constantly cultivated in gardens, orchards and controlled settings whereby there is good care and management.

Horticulture is very vital to the human existence and financial development in myriads of ways.

Firstly, horticulture provides healthy food such as fruits and vegetables which have abundant contents of vitamins and minerals and have low contents of fiber. Those are the foods that will keep an individual healthy and avoid several diseases.

Second, horticulture is connected to the economic development. The production and sale of fruits, vegetables, flowers and decorative plants lead to the creation of employment to the farmers, traders, and the labourers at the processing plants.

Third, the horticulture improves the environment and beauty of the surrounding. Cities and communities are made more beautiful and pleasant places to live in by plantation of trees, flowers and lawns.

Fourth, the industries are assisted by horticulture in raw materials. Some of the horticultural crops include food processing, cosmetics, medicines and beverages.

Finally but not the least is horticulture which facilitates recreation and rest. Gardening and care of parks and gardens are the leisure activities that improve the well-being of the mind as well as eliminate stress.
