Forestry

Forestry is that field of science and practice which concerns itself with the management of forests in a way that they stay healthy and productive to the present and the future generations. It involves planting of trees, preservation and conservation as well as responsible utilization of forest resources. Forests are of great benefit since they provide oxygen, food to the wildlife, store carbon, and provide raw materials like timber, fruits, and medicine.

One of the major goals of forestry is sustainability. This means that after cutting the trees to manufacture wood or whatever the reason is then other trees are planted to replace it. Sustainable forestry assists in preserving the survival of forests in order to allow people and the environment to utilize it. Over- logging, agricultural or urban developments may clear the forests without proper management of forests hence they may produce soil erosion, biodiversity loss as well as climatic problems.

The rural population is also critical of forestry. Forests provide livelihood to most that fell timber, gathers honey, harvests herbs or do eco-tourism activities. There are long term incomes and resources that can be provided through proper management of forests. This makes forestry an economic activity and an environmental activity.

Another important feature of forestry is conservation of forests. The environmental workers and forest rangers help in the conservation of forests against illegal logging, bushfires and pests. They also educate the people about the significance of trees and publicize the operations of planting trees. Even small acts of planting a tree in your neighbourhood or reducing the amount of waste paper can help forestry as well.

Forestry is becoming an issue of concern in the contemporary world as a result of the role that the forest plays in alleviating the effects of climate change as they reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The knowledge about healthy forests is also known to improve the quality of the air and control the temperature which makes the surrounding more comfortable to both human and animal population.

Lastly, forestry is significant concerning the fact that the balance of the ecosystem is maintained and the resources of forestry are provided to the succeeding generations.
