Environment, in essence, is everything that is around us and it is comprised of all of living things and our surroundings, the non-living aspect such as lands and bodies of water. In all these things, the environment plays a vital role to sustain our life and all the activities that we are engaged in. And especially to us farmers who rely more on our environment to perform our farming activity. An environment that benefits the farmer and a rural people will have factors such as fertile land, clean and adequate water, and suitable environment; and these things contribute to the productivity of crops and growth of animals.

But at present, our environment is threatened by factors such as deforestation, environmental pollution, climate change and poor disposal of waste which degrades our surrounding and consequently affect the living things and eventually our survival and farming. Pollution of water directly influences our living thing such as wild animals and ultimately humans who depend on them both on our food and our health. Polluted water causes great loss to both man and crops. Thus we have to preserve our environment, and it is our duty as citizens. Simple things as planting trees, reusing things and reduce consumption levels, appropriate waste disposal, and use of environment-friendly techniques in farming can take us far.

Practices such as crop rotation, using of organic manure and contour ploughing helps to conserve the soil nutrients and enhance the per unit area yield. Promoting public awareness and environmental education is very essential for changing people's behavior. As they realize the consequences of their actions toward the environment, people will be responsible. Citizens are able to assist protect and manage natural resources by launching regular cleanups and seeking appropriate policy from their governments. To sum up, the environment is everything in terms of the totality of life and our growth and therefore, we cannot live sustainably without environment and far less our farming.
