African farmers should choose perennial crops over seasonal crops

If you're close to a few farmers here in Africa you will know that the maize growers amongst other crop growers are always having problems with the department people. These are people who just don't understand that the cost of fertilizer is very expensive at this moment in time, yet every year again the price of Cassava drops after everyone has harvested at the same point. They choose to the. plant Palm oil because it continues to produce from the ground for an extended period.

If you have just five acres or larger land, the world market for a type of Cashew nut is far better than the world market for cocoa nuts, but the problem is the cocoa board controls everything. Avocado seems to have a good selling price in the marketplace though. The Plantain produces many bunches every 2 months without you having to work a lot for it to be done.

When I visit the farm mostly the plantains are almost always ready for harvest.

By planting these types of crop along your boundary line, if someone tries to steal your land, it is much harder for them. It's like a cheat code way to protect ownership of land.

One thing I've noticed is that the majority of government policy is designed to benefit large corporations. As a farmer you could easily enter poverty zone if you decide to grow only short term crops. You can grow short term crops for let's say three months, but you will eventually only be paid a small amount of money by the middleman. If it's grown perennially, the crops will produce steady cash flow, but you have to be patient enough to wait for them to produce for about the first two years.

The biggest problem is most landlords are not patient at all, one crop you grow well with patience can be enough to pay for your kids school fees.
