Introduction

Many of the films we watch are adapted from real life things we often see, experience, or even do ourselves. There are also many films that we would never have imagined, presented as points of comparison and sources of knowledge for the audience.

I work as a teacher and am also a father of six children. I spend almost all my time observing the behaviour and mindset of children, and I approach everything with love and care.

There’s a film I watched that really felt as though it transported me into real life. It’s a film that reflects my day to day work as a teacher. And I really learnt a lot from watching it.

Taare Zameen Par has taught me a great deal about the meaning of education, it’s a film that resonates with my everyday life. After all, being a teacher is not just about teaching and educating, but also about understanding children and giving them the space to grow.

After watching the film, I was reminded once again of the importance of understanding how each individual is unique in the way they experience things and how they act. It is this understanding that serves as the gateway to the knowledge we wish to impart, so that values of goodness can flourish alongside academic pursuits.

In real life, I share similarities with Aamir Khan character in the film, both in the real world and in Taare Zameen Par. Every day, I teach around 60 pupils at school, and I face many challenges arising from the unique learning styles of the pupils.

The Impact of Films on Me

Not all children understand things in the same way, think in the same way, or learn in the same way. Just like in that film, where a pupil was considered stupid, even though he simply had a different way of understanding things.

In that film, a boy called Ishaan had difficulty reading, writing and spelling. It wasn’t because he was incapable, but because he had a specific neuro-based learning difficulty we teachers often call it Dyslexia.

In certain cases I have encountered at school, a structured approach to learning helps them to understand things much better. In fact, many of those with Dyslexia are far more creative than other children.

Therefore, this film has always reminded me that it is wrong to think of children who struggle with reading, writing and spelling as being stupid.

A teacher needs to employ effective methods and approaches to ensure that the potential of children with Dyslexia can be fully developed. Their understanding of academic subjects is only part of the process; teachers can accelerate this process by using learning methods that must be properly understood.

Impact on life

I recommend the film Taare Zameen Par to you, particularly to teachers and parents. My outlook changed significantly after watching this film, there were many learning methods I tried to understand.

In the classroom, I am able to offer different learning methods to my pupils who have learning difficulties, I even apply this knowledge at home with my own children. By understanding this, I am able to remain calmer and better understand all the situations I face when teaching my children and pupils.

We can learn and understand everything, I’m certain of that. It now depends on our realisation that a child’s uniqueness is a gift, we simply need to give them the space to develop in their own way.

Ultimately, Taare Zameen Par changed the way I view children and pupils, showing me that difficulties with reading, writing or understanding lessons do not mean a child is not intelligent.

As a teacher and a parent, I have always learnt that understanding them is the first step before teaching. Therefore, our task is not to force all children to develop in the same way, but to provide them with the space, methods and opportunities to discover their full potential.
