Every animal is important just like the goat that saved its village. In Amaza village, there lived a brown goat named Oscar. Oscar didn't look special compared to other goats. He was not the biggest in the village or the strongest. But Oscar was different from every other goat in his village.

While other goats stayed close to their owners so they could be fed well Oscar loved to explore places in the village to feed. One day he walked through the dusty paths, visited the farms, and sometimes even stood near the village market square where women sold yams and vegetables.

The villagers often laughed at him.

Mama Cynthia would say; "Look at this stubborn goat, I am sure one day he will get lost in the bush".

But Oscar always returned home on time.

One night during the dry season, something unusual happened. A small fire started near the edge of the village where dry grasses surrounded the huts. The fire started slowly, but the wind began pushing it towards the houses.

In the village, everyone was asleep, except Oscar.

Oscar was roaming around as usual when he then noticed the smell of smoke and a bright orange glow from a distance. He quickly ran toward the nearest house and started bleating loudly.

"Bee! Beer! Breeze!"

No one listened to him at first. But he didn't stop; instead, he ran from one house to another, crying out aloud so his voice could be heard.

An old man finally heard his voice and woke up.

The old man came out and said; "What is wrong with this small goat?"

As the man looked ahead he saw fire spreading toward the village.

He then shouted "fire! Fire! Everyone wake up."

The whole village woke up. Men rushed to the fireplace with buckets of water, women carried sand, and together they all fought the fire and stopped it from burning.

As the day break they all gathered in the village square.

The old man stood up in front of everyone in the gathering and said to them all; "It is not for this little goat, our homes would have burned last night."

The villagers then looked at Oscar and praised him. Mama Cynthia even brought him fresh cassava leaves. From that moment on, Oscar was no longer called a stubborn goat, he was then called "the watchful goat of Amaza."
