Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #61
Hello, friends welcome to my post in which I have discussed "Basic Knowledge in Agriculture 61" as part of my participation in this contest
What is Tilling
Tilling is a process in agriculture that farmers use to bring soil together for the purpose of planting crops. In a layman's understanding, it is the practice of preparing the soil for planting by breaking it, loosening it, or mechanically turning the soil.
Tilling helps create a suitable soil structure for seeds to germinate and for roots to grow more quickly. In Nigeria and other African countries, tilling is usually done using hoes, ploughs, tractors, or harrows.
Discuss the types of Soil Tilling
Primary Tillage: Is the first stage for soil working operations. This stage involves deep turning of the soil to break hard layers.
Secondary Tillage: This is the process of tillage that is about refining the soil. It breaks large clods into smaller particles and smooths the surface of the soil.
Zero/No Tillage: This is the type of Tillage by which seeds are planted directly into the residue of previous crops.
What are the Advantages and disadvantages of soil tilling
Advantages:
- Tilling improves soil aeration and water infiltration
- Tillage helps control weeds and pests.
- Tillage makes planting easier and more effective
- Tillage enhances root penetration and early crop growth.
Disadvantages:
- Tillage can lead to soil erosion, especially on sloped land
- Tillage reduces soil organic matter over time.
- Tillage disturbs soil microorganisms and earthworms
- Tillage increases labor, fuel costs, and time.
